Disney+ has been changing its schedule amidst the coronavirus pandemic and adding titles that were originally set to arrive in later months, but it hasn't changed its plans about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and it's missing a big opportunity this weekend. One of Disney+’s strengths is its catalogue, with a long list of movies and TV shows from Disney, Pixar, Fox, National Geographic, and more – as long as they are family friendly (whatever that means to Disney).
The Mouse House’s streaming service will also be the home to all new Disney releases, including films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, making it easy for subscribers to binge watch the stories from these extensive universes. The original trilogy, the prequels, and part of the sequels of the Star Wars saga are available to stream on Disney+, but the platform is still missing the final chapter in the Skywalker saga.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker won’t be added to Disney+ until much later, which is a big mistake from the studio, and this weekend would have been a very good chance to release it on streaming.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in theaters in December 2019 and Disney planned its home release for March 17, 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic prompted the studio to release it on Digital HD four days earlier and on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on March 31. However, the Mouse House didn’t change its plans when it comes to The Rise of Skywalker’s release on Disney+, and it’s still set for October 2020. Given that the studio did change its schedule with other – arguably smaller in comparison – releases, it’s surprising it didn’t do the same with the final Star Wars film.
Disney+ was winning the coronavirus streaming wars by adding Frozen 2 three months earlier than planned, as well as Pixar’s Onward, which was made available digitally only two weeks after its theatrical release, and on streaming not long after. Disney+ is not only missing on a big opportunity to earn more subscribers by adding The Rise of Skywalker way sooner, but Easter weekend was also a great time to do it, with more people looking for something to watch with the family. From a point of view, it’s understandable that Disney+’s plans for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker haven’t changed, as the coronavirus pandemic was a big shake-up that happened very fast, but at the same time, if the studio was able to make last minute changes to the schedules of Frozen 2 and Onward, it could have done the same.
