The Assistant to the Regional Manager is often confused with the Assitant Regional Manager — a title underneath Michael's position of Regional Manager in The Office. It's a job title that not too many people at Dunder Mifflin are dying to get except for Dwight Schrute. Unlike an assistant manager or a co-manager, the Assistant to the Regional Manager is literally the Reginal Manager's assistant (which is why no one wants the position except for Dwight).
In the earlier seasons, Michael becomes obsessed with Ryan and starts to rely on him more than Dwight, which bothers Dwight. While Dwight and Ryan both outgrew the potential of being Assistant to the Regional Manager, we still can't help but wonder who the better assistant would be: Dwight or Ryan?
10 Ryan Went To Business School
When we meet Ryan, he's a temp who was a student at a business school. Michael learns more about Ryan's business school endeavors during the episode "The Fire." Michael realizes how smart Ryan is how he would be a better manager than he is (which makes Dwight jealous).
Eventually, Ryan has Michael come to speak to his class on the ups and downs of working in a failing industry. Michael thought the speech was supposed to be complimentary but the joke was on him. Regardless of how Ryan treated Michael, Rayn was clearly educated enough to succeed in the job (and a pushover).
9 Dwight Has Been At Dunder Mifflin Longer
If Michael was trying to hire within to find an Assistant to the Regional Manager, Dwight would have to be his guy, right? He's been working at Dunder Mifflin since the '90s and knows everything there is about the company and paper.
Plus, no one is more willing to work alongside Michael like Dwight. Whether he's the Assistant Regional Manager or the Assistant to the Regional Manager, Dwight wants nothing more than to put Dunder Mifflin Scranton at the top.
8 Ryan Was Promoted To North-East Region Director Of New Media
Due to Ryan's business degree, he was promoted to the VP of Northeastern Sales after Jan was fired. He left the Scranton branch in a hurry and broke it off with Kelly. The next time we see Ryan in his new role is in "Fun Run" where he's very confident with his new promotion.
As Office fans know, Ryan doesn't last long in his new role and comes back to Dunder Mifflin after Michael re-hires him to be apart of the Michael Scott Paper Company. Due to Michael sticking his neck out for Ryan, he should have been more than willing to be an Assistant to the Regional Manager after being arrested.
7 Dwight Would Never Falsify Work Documents As Ryan Did
When it comes to Dwight and Ryan, it's obvious Dwight is more loyal to Michael and Dunder Mifflin than Ryan is. Does it bother Dwight that he's the Assistant to the Regional Manager instead of the Assistant Regional Manager?
Of course. But Dwight would never lie his way to the top or put Dunder Mifflin in danger like Ryan did. Ryan was in charge of new media and creating a website for Dunder Mifflin so their clients could order paper easier but he ended up messing with the numbers and committing fraud.
6 Ryan Wanted To Climb The Corporate Ladder
Unlike Dwight, Ryan was trying to get out of Scranton. He started out as a temp, then as a salesman, and continued climbing the ladder at corporate before hitting rock bottom and starting all over again.
However, since he wanted to build and grow within Dunder Mifflin, having Assistant to the Regional Manager on your resume looks better than "temp."
5 Dwight Is Eternally Dedicated To Michael
Dwight as always been indebted to Michael but he's even more of a diehard Michael fan when he's given orders from Michael personally. When it comes to Dwight's work ethic, he'll beat everyone out to come out on top. Sadly, Michael doesn't always want Dwight around, which is why Ryan might be a better fit as an assistant because Michael would actually have him do things for him.
But with Dwight, he has shown loyalty to Michael time and time again. He brought Michael to work after he burned his foot and ran into a burning building to get Michael's cell phone for him when he thought he left it inside. Dwight would do anything for Michael, thus Dunder Mifflin.
4 Ryan Was Michael's Top Pick For The Michael Scott Paper Company
When Michael quit Dunder Mifflin after Charles Miner came to town, Dwight didn't follow suit and follow Michael to greener pastures. He stayed right where he was at Dunder Mifflin because he was actually getting along well with Charles. Surprisingly, Pam jumped ship and joined Michael but there was one more person: Ryan. Granted, Ryan wasn't working at Dunder Mifflin at the time but he did leave his job at the bowling alley because he had that much trust in Michael.
Considering Ryan never even liked Michael, leaving his job for a job with Michael was pretty telling of his trust in him. He even created the "financial model" Michael Scott Paper Company would follow until Dunder Mifflin bought them.
3 Dwight Was Voted Top Salesman Of The Year
Dwight has been at Dunder Mifflin for as long (or longer) as Michael has. He breathes sales and for as weird as a man he is, he's really good at his job. He may seem busy pulling pranks on Jim, flirting with Angela, and taking care of his beet farm, but paper sales is his priority.
We even learn in the ninth season that he snacks on paper... He knows the company inside out, which would make him a great Assistant to the Regional Manager.
2 Ryan Was Always Thinking Outside Of The Box
As annoying as characters like Pam and Jim thought Ryan was, he was always thinking outside of the box. Fans can't say that Ryan doesn't have a knack for business, he just doesn't always follow through with his ideas. We see this when he invented WUPHF, when he reinvented his image when he was promoted, and even when he graduated business school.
Ryan was always thinking of the next best thing (even when he should have been focusing on doing work at Dunder Mifflin) and that can be inspiring for a manager to have around the office.
1 Dwight Truly Cares About His Co-Workers (Even Though He Doesn't Always Show It)
What made Michael such a great regional manager is how he treated his workers. Sure, he acted like they were all blood relatives but he cared about their well-being. Likewise, Dwight lived his life in the office similarly. In his own, weird way, Dwight cared about his co-workers.
He helped Phyllis when she pulled her back out, he's helped Michael on multiple occasions, and he took care of Pam when she was crying over Jim in the hallway. He may act like a volunteer sheriff from time to time but he's a man who cares about the people around him.
