The lack of George Lucas wasn’t the only issue with Star Wars: The Force Awakens – what about how underused Iko Uwais’ character Razoo Quin-Fee was? Indonesian martial artist and actor Iko Uwais rose to fame after Welsh director Gareth Evans cast him in cult action film Merantau which introduced film fans to the martial art of pencak silat. Uwais is best known for his role as rookie cop Rama in The Raid: Redemption and its sequel The Raid 2: Berandal which were also directed by Evans and featured fight scenes choreographed by Uwais himself.
When news broke a martial artist of Iko Uwais’ caliber had been cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens – alongside his equally talented Raid co-stars Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman – people were hyped to see how it would utilize their skills. Details of their roles were kept under wraps but shortly before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December 2015, it was revealed Uwais and his Indonesian co-stars would be playing members of an intergalactic criminal gang known as the Kanjiklub. Surely that would mean Iko Uwais would be involved in at least one epic fight scene, right?
Sadly, that wasn’t the case. When Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters fans soon learned the Kanjiklub’s appearance was limited to one scene. The scene in question comes when Rey and Finn board the Eravana and Han Solo is ambushed by two groups – the Guavian Death Gang and the Kanjiklub – who he’s swindled over. Unfortunately, Uwais’ Razoo Quin-Fee only gets to utter one line of dialogue (“Search the freighter” in Jablogian) before Rey releases a trio of Rathtars (AKA space squids) that attack the two groups, causing them to flee or get eaten.

All in all, the role of Razoo Quin-Fee was a cameo that boiled down to looking menacingly in Han Solo and Chewbacca’s direction before being chased off by a space squid. J.J. Abrams could have at least had Iko Uwais and his Raid co-stars kick some Rathtar butt, silat-style – but no. All the Kanjiklub gang do is fire off a few rounds from their blaster rifles before fleeing from the creatures.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens might’ve wasted Razoo Quin-Fee, but Iko Uwais probably isn’t too bothered. Since filming the movie, he’s nabbed a leading role on Netflix martial arts crime drama Wu Assassins as San Francisco Chinatown chef-turned-assassin Kai Jin. Uwais’ fans will be happy to know that Wu Assassins uses the actor and his immense martial arts skills to their full potential.
