The Batman: Matt Reeves Casts Jeffrey Wright As Jim Gordon

It's official: director Matt Reeves has cast Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon in The Batman. The next DCEU Batman film will trade Ben Affleck for a younger leading man, Robert Pattinson. Reeves and DC have been tight-lipped about the plot of the movie, which won't be released until June 25, 2021. Still, Wright has been rumored to be Reeves' first choice for Gordon for months.

Little is known about the movie besides its release date and cast list, which now includes the highly respected Westworld star. Jeffry wright is a highly accomplished actor who won both a Tony and Emmy for his work in Angels in America. More recently, he played a central figure in HBO's high-concept re-imagining of Westworld. Now, he'll play the top cop in Gotham City when Pattinson dons the Batman cowl.

Matt Reeves announced the news on Twitter with a gif of Wright saying, "Tweet something." It's not the first time Reeves has released an important piece of The Batman casting news with a gif on Twitter. He previously announced on Twitter that Zoe Kravitz would play Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the movie. Paul Dano will round out the cast as The Riddler. With its new Commissioner Gordon and other leading stars signed on, the Reeves flick is gearing up for production. The Batman is expected to start filming in London in January 2020.

Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which carefully plans out each successive phase of its storytelling, fans don't know what to expect from The Batman. Besides the cast list, fans have been told very little about the movie except that it will be a film-noir-style take on the character. While Batman is known as the world's greatest detective in the comics, his film incarnations often focus more on his fighting skills. The recent casting announcements signal that DC and Reeves are taking a different approach. Clearly, they are investing in talented actors and actresses. While Pattinson is best known for his work in the Twilight franchise, he has spent the last several years starring in critically acclaimed indie films, including the black-and-white horror film The Lighthouse from indie director Robert Eggers. The Batman is actually one of the first major franchise movies Pattinson has signed on for since the end of the Twilight franchise in 2012.

With Wright as his Commissioner Gordon, Reeves has lined up some incredibly talented stars for The Batman. As an actor, Wright has an incredible dramatic range, and his casting could signal an exciting new take on Jim Gordon, who was previously played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. It's still unclear how exactly The Batman will fit in with the rest of the DCEU and Justice League continuity, but the latest casting news should assure fans that Batman's cinematic legacy is in very capable hands.
