Netflix's comedic fantasy TV show Disenchantment has been renewed for season 3 - but when can fans expect to see more of Bean and her friends? The animated series from creator Matt Groening has done for fantasy what his show Futurama did for science-fiction and built up an avid audience in the process, spinning a twisted fairy tale that focuses on the renegade princess Bean, outcast elf Elfo and a low-ranking demon called Luci.
The first part of Disenchantment ended on a major cliffhanger. Most of the inhabitants of the kingdom of Dreamland were turned to stone, as Bean was spirited away by her long-lost mother, Queen Dagmar, who was revealed to be the evil sorceress responsible for cursing Dreamland. As season 2 opened, Bean was without allies in her mother's homeland of Maru, due to the death of Elfo and Luci being captured by an unseen enemy. Disenchantment season 2 ended with a cliffhanger similar to the one that ended season 1, with our heroes defying certain death yet again only to find themselves in an even stranger sort of danger.
Naturally, season 2's ending has left fans of the show anxious to know when this latest cliffhanger will be addressed, and how long they must wait for that resolution in Disenchantment season 3. Thankfully, as mentioned before, Disenchantment season 3 is already in the works, so fans don't need to worry that the popular animated show will end with the story unresolved. Here's everything we know about when Disenchantment season 3 will be released, and what we can expect from its story.
Disenchantment Season 1 was originally released in August 2018. Two months later, Netflix released a trailer confirming that season 2 would arrive sometime in 2019, with more new episodes already being scheduled for release in 2020 and 2021. Matt Groening later confirmed that each part would consist of 10 episodes, with a total of 40 episodes being planned. "We’re excited to continue this epic journey with Netflix," Groening said. "Stay tuned for more cranked-up suspense, infuriating plot twists, and beloved characters getting knocked off."
No official release date has been announced for Disenchantment season 3, beyond the year 2020. Given the scheduling used to release the first 2 parts, however, we can certainly make an educated guess. We expect Disenchantment season 3 to release on Netflix in mid-2020. Other animated series produced by Netflix, such as Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth, have maintained similar annual release schedules, so Disenchantment should continue to do the same.
What marks Disenchantment as unique is how its first season was broken into two parts, so as to decrease the amount of time the audience had to wait for new episodes. This is similar to the process used for producing animated series for broadcast networks, given the long turnaround time on creating quality animation. In this, the approach to producing Disenchantment more closely resembles that of The Simpsons or Family Guy, despite its smaller episode order per season, than most animated series produced for streaming services.
Disenchantment season 2 ended with Bean being accused of witchcraft and attempting to murder her father, King Zog. With her half-brother, Prince Derek, installed on the throne as a puppet, a secret society known as the Seekers organized a kangaroo court that saw Bean, Elfo and Luci publicly discredited and sentenced to burn at the stake. As the trio resigned themselves to death, the ground underneath them gave away and they fell into a vast underground cave, surrounded by strange mole men. The creatures parted to reveal Bean's mom, Queen Dagmar, who sarcastically asked why she hadn't gotten a hug.
This cliffhanger conclusion leaves Disenchantment season 2's ending on a similar note to season 1, though this time Bean is fully aware of her mother's treacherous nature and she isn't alone. It seems likely that season 3 will address the particulars of the prophecy that required Dagmar marry King Zog in order to have a daughter, and just what debt their family owed Hell that Bean was meant to pay off - a plot point that was referenced in the season 2 premiere and then dropped entirely for the next 10 episodes. Beyond that, it seems likely that season 3 will center upon Bean attempting to clear her name, thwart the Seekers, and save her fatally wounded father from their clutches.
