After a die-hard Friday the 13th fan visited the real-life Cyrstal Lake, he used the opportunity to create a home-brewed beer using water from the classic film location. In the original 1980 slasher flick, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Hardwick, New Jersey appears as Crystal Lake. The idyllic campground has become an iconic location in one of the greatest horror franchises of all time.
As true Friday the 13th fans know, slasher Jason Voorhees barely appears in the original 1980 movie, as his mother is ultimately revealed to be the true killer. That means Crystal Lake is more of a genuine character in the film than the hockey-mask wearing teen killer. Since the original film, many of the sequels have returned to Crystal Lake, where many of the franchise's most memorable scenes take place.
In September, Roger Krzeminski was selected to participate in a rare tour of Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco. The campground still operates as a Boy Scout camp, but the operators do open the grounds to tours occasionally. When Krzeminski got the chance to visit Crystal Lake for himself, he didn't want to waste the opportunity. He told Bloody Disgusting that he decided to make a strange request of the tour guides: to take home Crystal Lake water for use in his home microbrewery. The request was granted, and Krzeminski used the water to create Camp Crystal Lake American Red Ale. Because he was only allowed to take a few gallons of water, the extremely limited supply will only be shared with friends and family. The few dozen bottles Krzeminski showed off to Bloody Disgusting feature a blood-like red wax dripping down the bottles.
Now that his homebrew has gone viral, Krzeminski told the horror site that he hopes his creation ultimately inspires more support for the caretakers of Crystal Lake
At the end of the day, this project of mine would have never left the ground if it weren’t for the generosity and goodwill of the people at [Cyrstal Lake Tours]. If anything were to come of this, I’d truly love for the outcome to be more people directed to the website and buy souvenirs, tour tickets or merchandise to support the camp and to keep “Camp Crystal Lake” thriving so future fans and scouts can still see this place and enjoy the experiences as much as I really have.”
Unfortunately for fans of the horror series, it's been over a decade since the last-attempted reboot of Friday the 13th. In 2009, Michael Bay's reboot failed to win over audiences, and further attempts to revive the series have failed. However, that's not because the franchise is lacking in passionate fans. Despite fan support, the horror villain is unlikely to appear on the silver screen in the near future. Thanks to a lawsuit between the original film's writer and director, another reboot is extremely unlikely while the film rights remain in legal limbo.
Even though it's been 10 years since the last Friday the 13th movie, the franchise still has extremely devoted fans. The 12 films in the Friday franchise may vary in quality, but Jason has proven to be one of the most influential horror villains in cinematic history. Many fans like to pay tribute to their favorite film franchises, especially around Halloween, when Jason masks are a common sight. However, Krzeminski homebrew ale is one of the most creative homages in recent memory.
