In a fan cut of the trailers for Todd Phillips' Joker, Joaquin Phoenix's version of the Clown Prince of crime dances on some steps to the tune of Eminem's "Venom" - and it works surprisingly well.
2018 was a big year for superhero movie tie-in songs. Deadpool 2 had "Ashes," Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had "Sunflower," and Black Panther had an entire album of songs including the Oscar-nominated "All The Stars" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Not to be left out, the Tom Hardy Venom movie had a rap song by Eminem in which the artist tried to come up with as many rhymes as possible for the word Venom ("Adrenaline momentum" is the best one, and after that it's mostly variations on "I'm" and "'em").
Any time a character dances in a movie, it's virtually inevitable that the scene will end up being cut to different songs. The same goes for action scenes, with Thor: Ragnarok's bridge battle scene (originally set to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song") being dubbed over with Britney Spears' "Toxic" and Star Wars: The Last Jedi's throne room fight scene getting a "Kung Fu Fighting" remix. Joker might be one of the darkest DC movies yet, but it also has a scene in which the main character dances - which means it has now inevitably received the mashup treatment.
As the accolades in the trailer suggest, Joker is arriving in theaters with a lot of fanfare and already some Oscar buzz, with critics raving about Phoenix's take on the character. Joker is loosely inspired by 1983 movie The King of Comedy, and imagines a new origin story for Batman's most infamous enemy. Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a middle-aged man with a day job as a sign-spinning clown and aspirations of becoming a successful stand-up comedian. The pursuit of his goals brings him into conflict with one Thomas Wayne, and kicks off a storm of chaos and violence in Gotham City.
Venom also knows a bit about chaos and violence, being a symbiote from another planet who enjoys biting people's heads off. Venom was mostly panned by critics but became a surprise box office hit, proving just bizarre enough to win over audiences and make them want to see more of Eddie Brock and his gooey alien pal. Venom 2 is on the way, so hopefully Sony Pictures can cut another deal with Eminem and we'll get a whole new song to dance to for the sequel.
