The Walking Dead character Dwight is still alive, actor Austin Amelio has confirmed. As one of Negan's trusted inner circle, Dwight was introduced into the AMC zombie apocalypse series as a villain, however it quickly became clear that the character perhaps wasn't as dastardly as he first appeared. Although he was responsible for both torturing Daryl Dixon and shooting an arrow through Olivia's eye, viewers soon discovered that Dwight secretly hated Negan for stealing his wife and was only loyal to the Saviors because he believed it to be the best way of surviving.
As audiences began to feel a degree of sympathy for the character, the "All Out War" arc saw Dwight betray Negan and act as Rick's secret informant within the Savior camp. Despite this change of heart, both Daryl and Tara remained determined to kill Dwight throughout season 8 but, ultimately, Daryl took mercy on his former captor and sent Dwight off into the woods with a few supplies, giving him a chance to live on. Since that moment, Dwight has yet to return in The Walking Dead and his fate following the six-year time jump is unknown.

However, it has now been confirmed by the man who plays him on screen that Dwight is still alive in the show's fictional world and the door seemingly remains open for a potential return. Speaking at the recent Walker Stalker event (via Business Insider), Amelio said:
“He’s not dead, that’s all I can say. He’s alive. He’s alive in the world somewhere...There’s so many different ways you can go with him. There’s the comic book, there’s Sherry’s story, there’s me being with the Alexandrians. I have no idea. I have full faith in the writers. They do an awesome job, so I’m sure they’d bring me back in an incredible way.”
There's an unwritten rule on The Walking Dead that unless a character is shown as explicitly dead on-screen, they're still alive. As such, many viewers perhaps assumed that Dwight would be alive but with more than six years passing between Dwight's exit and the current point in the timeline, it had started to look like the character had no further part to play in the series. It also wouldn't be the first time that a character has disappeared never to return. Amelio's comments seem to imply that while a return for Dwight isn't currently planned, the actor himself would be open to reprising the role in future.
As Amelio alludes to, there is plenty of Dwight material from the comic series to cover. The printed incarnation of the character actually stays in Alexandria after the war against the Saviors and becomes a vital member of the community, as well as the leader of their militia. Dwight's wife Sherry, however, remains loyal to the Saviors and this creates an interesting split in Dwight's loyalties that erupts into a tense dynamic between Rick and the former Savior.
