After a successful first season and renewal, Narcos: Mexico will bring back two key players: Both Diego Luna and Scoot McNairy are set to reprise their roles in the ongoing Netflix series about international drug trafficking.
In 2015, Netflix premiered Narcos’ first installment, which examined the rise of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and continued through season 2. For season 3, Narcos transitioned to a narrative about the Cali cartel, thus setting the tone for Narcos: Mexico. The latest chapter explores the formation of the first Mexican drug cartel during the 1980s, organized by Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo aka “El Padrino,” portrayed by Mexican actor Luna (If Beale Street Could Talk). In season 1, Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp) stars as real-life DEA agent Kiki Camarena, with the veteran character McNairy (Killing Them Softly) representing the unreliable narrator; a character that doesn’t appear on screen until the season finale.

Per Deadline, Luna and McNairy will return for Narcos: Mexico season 2, a logical choice given the narrative thread and critical acclaim for the series. For his lead performance as Gallardo, Luna earned a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Actor in a Drama Series, the latest accolade in an accomplished career that dates back to a breakthrough role in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 film Y Tu Mamá También. While the details of McNairy’s character are relatively vague - in comparison to the more defined real-life figures - audiences can expect a strong complementary performance. In recent years, McNairy has appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), War Machine (2017), and Destroyer (2018). He also had a main role in the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire (2014-17), along with the Netflix miniseries Godless (2017). In 2019, McNairy will appear in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Narcos: Mexico’s first season primarily focused on the character dynamic between Gallardo and Camarena, all the while using historical events to connect the Mexican drug trade to the original Columbian narrative. Brazilian star Wagner Moura (Elite Squad) makes a cameo as the iconic Escobar, while Alejandro Edda has a small but significant role as Joaquín Guzmán, otherwise known as “El Chapo” - arguably the most well-known Mexican drug lord given his societal influence and the media’s extensive coverage of his exploits over the years.
Now that Luna and McNairy will officially reprise their roles, it seems that “El Chapo” will likely play a prominent role in the upcoming episodes. Narcos: Mexico season 2 is currently being produced in Mexico City.
