Mob Psycho 100 has received an almost two-minute long teaser trailer hinting at an apocalypse in the upcoming season 2. While the first season of the series introduced the titular character Mob - as well as his psychic powers - the trailer for season 2 fleshes the story out to cataclysmic levels.
Created by ONE, the manga artist behind the smash hit One-Punch Man, and with animation from the Japanese animation company Bones, the first season of Mob Psycho 100 followed the exploits of Mob, a young Japanese boy in 8th grade who seems generally unremarkable - aside from the fact that he possesses awe-inspiring psychic powers. Under the guidance of a fraudulent psychic, Mob learns to control his powers and use them for good, despite the fact that he loses control of his abilities when he hits certain emotional thresholds. Bones has routinely set the bar for animation in the industry with both Fullmetal Alchemist series, the Cowboy Bebop film, Space Dandy, and My Hero Academia all under their direction. Now, the mind-bending visuals in the season 2 trailer alone seem to be pushing animators to new heights.

The trailer for season 2 was announced on the official Mob Psycho 100 website, with some glimpses at new characters that will make appearances throughout the second season revealed in the announcement as well. The trailer introduces a handful of characters who are all presumably a rival to Mob, either socially or in psychic power. The characters include Keiji Mogami, a media figure with genuine psychic powers; Emi a junior high school student gunning to be student council president; Banshomaru Shinra, a weak psychic trying to peddle his skills on the street; Kirin Shodo, who may turn out to be one of the main villains of the season; and Minori Asagiri, a recluse who lives in a mansion whose father may be possessed.
The trailer begins relatively uneventful, showing small glimpses into Mob’s everyday life, and it slowly escalates to include monster-of-the-week style encounters. However, about halfway through the trailer, it takes a turn, depicting Mob losing control and seemingly deciding to wipe out the world. The trailer ends with a city twisted up into the sky, completely inverted, and the visuals, as well as a song by MOB CHOIR called “99.9” - which will be the series’ new intro theme song - is chilling.
Between Mob Psycho 100 and Dororo, the early 2017 anime season looks to be the most hotly anticipated in recent memory. If the trailer really does depict a heel-turn for Mob, the season could present a really interesting new problem for the supporting cast to tackle as the former hero becomes an unexpected antagonist. We saw a bit of that possibility in season 1 when the earnest and caring Mob lost control while fighting Teruki Hanazawa, nearly killing Teruki and all of the surrounding area in the process. If you’re even a tangential fan of anime, you owe it to yourself to check out this series.
