Arrrowverse 2019 Crossover Is Crisis On Infinite Earths

2019's Arrowverse crossover will be an adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths, according to Arrow star Stephen Amell. The Canadian actor has played Oliver Queen (a.k.a Green Arrow) for seven seasons now. Originally the only member of The CW's DC-based universe, the show has since spun off The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Despite starting life on CBS, Supergirl has since swapped networks, and has also officially joined the Arrowverse fold.

Their annual crossover event has become a staple of this particular multiverse, as evidenced by Aquaman's Jason Momoa personally promoting it. Although Legends of Tomorrow was absent from this year's drama, Elseworlds proved to be the Arrowverse's wildest collective adventure yet. Starting on Sunday's episode of The Flash, Oliver woke to find his life had been swapped with that of Barry Allen's. The journey for answers (and to ultimately save their world) not only saw the return of Tyler Hoechlin's Superman but, in Monday's episode of Arrow, saw the highly anticipated introduction of Gotham City and Batwoman (Ruby Rose).  The three-episode event concluded in suitably dramatic and action-packed fashion on Supergirl. The showrunners, however, are already looking forward and have settled on their next event.

Posting on Twitter, Amell shared an image that confirmed Crisis on Infinite Earths will be the subject of 2019's crossover. Written by Marv Wolfman, the 12-part series debuted in April 1985 and ran until March 1986. It quickly became a seminal and hugely popular arc within the world of DC, essentially leading to a reboot of the universe. Featuring numerous iconic villains, including Anti-Monitor, the comic-book arc is synonymous with a high body count, including some of the characters already established in the Arrowverse.

Crisis on Infinite Earths has been teased repeatedly across all corners of the Arrowverse. Most prominently, it's the subject of the headline often seen on the future newspaper glimpsed on The Flash. Elements of the arc have also shown up in various finale episodes, as Barry Allen has dealt with increasingly multi-dimensional threats. With the introduction of The Monitor (Anti-Monitor's heroic counterpart) and the seeming destruction of Earths seen in the teaser, many thought this year would be the one for Crisis on Infinite Earths. It would seem, however, that Elseworlds was instead a prelude for what's to come.

In many ways, this is what the Arrowverse has been building to for its entire run. Having already explored such classic stories as Flashpoint, this seemed like an inevitable step, even according to Gustin himself. Until now, however, it seemed like it would be merely the stuff of pipe dreams, easter eggs, and homage posters. With DC and Warner Bros increasingly allowing the shows to utilize more of the larger characters and storylines, many remained hopeful. That hope appears to have paid off. Much in the way Avengers: Endgame will serve as the end of an era for the MCU, "Crisis on Infinite Earths" could serve as such for The CW's superhero multiverse. With it already speculated that Oliver Queen could be replaced as The Green Arrow, this could be the storyline through which to similarly transition from the old guard to the new. Equally, it could pave the way for fresh series, including the already-announced Batwoman and the requested Superman and Lois spinoff. Whatever the case, the next year is sure to be one full of hype and furious speculation.
