The third movie in the Thor series, Thor: Ragnarok, might have come out over a year ago, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe film is still being talked about and analyzed to this day. Thor: Ragnarok was much different than other Thor movies, as director Taika Waititi took a much more comedic approach for Thor’s third solo adventure. While some people thought the comedy in the movie was a little over the top at times, other people loved the new approach to the Thor series. The first two films in the Thor trilogy are often seen as low points for the MCU, but Thor: Ragnarok received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics.
Thor: Ragnarok was a story about Thor having to escape from the planet Sakaar and save Asgard from his sister Hela. Thor is joined in his journey by recurring characters Loki, Hulk, and Heimdall, but the movie also introduces new characters like the Grandmaster, Valkyrie, Hela, and Skurge. Thor: Ragnarok tied together the storylines from the Thor: Ragnarok and Planet Hulk storylines, but it also led into the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.
While most people considered the movie to be a fun and visually stunning superhero movie, no film is without its flaws. While these mistakes in Thor: Ragnarok may seem insignificant to most of the story, there are still continuity errors that shouldn’t be overlooked.
Here are the 30 Mistakes Fans Completely Missed in Thor: Ragnarok.
30 Surtur’s Sword Disappears
In one of the very first scenes of the movie, comes one of the earliest mistakes in the film. The beginning of the movie shows Thor trapped in Surtur’s lair. Surtur has Thor chained up as he explains Ragnarok to him and what it means for Asgard.
Like any movie, the scene goes between wide shots and closeups to get emotions from both of the characters. In many of the wide shots of Surtur sitting on his throne, the hilt of his sword is seen, but the weapon completely disappears during the closeup shots.
29 Tony Stark’s Pants
One of the biggest mysteries in Thor: Ragnarok, and comics in general, is Hulk’s pants. Bruce Banner is usually clothed when he transforms into the Incredible Hulk, and while his shirt usually rips off, his pants end up staying mostly intact.
In the comics, it is explained that Hulk has pants made out of a special material that stretches to his size, but in Thor: Ragnarok, Banner wears Tony Stark’s pants. He even makes a joke that Tony likes his pants super tight, but later on in the movie when he transforms back into Hulk, the pants stretch along with Hulk.
28 Hogun Disappears And Reappears
Tadanobu Asano portrays the character Hogun in all three Thor movies, but he was at the center of a big continuity flaw in Thor: Ragnarok. When Hela first invades Asgard, she is somehow able to get all the way across the city without people noticing her, but when she is found, she is greeted to the entire Asgardian army.
Hogun is among the warriors to battle her, but when he attacks her, Hela kicks him through the side of the stairway she is standing on. Not only is the staircase fixed in the following scenes, but Hogun himself arises from the other departed soldiers even though it isn’t where he had previously fallen.
27 Magical Cars
One of the funnier scenes of Thor: Ragnarok shows Thor and Loki going to a nursing home to find their father Odin. While its a mystery as to how Loki was able to put Odin in a nursing home, the cars behind Thor also cause a continuity error.
In the wide shot as Loki is being transported by Doctor Strange, a silver car and a black truck are behind Thor, but in the very next shot, he has two yellow taxies behind him. Some may say that New York has a lot of busy traffic, but since the scene was supposed to be a continuous shot, the traffic is just a continuity error.
26 The Gladiator’s Weaponry
When Thor is forced to fight in the Grandmaster’s Contest of Champions, the fighters are given the opportunity to pick their weapons for the upcoming battle. Thor talks to Korg about how special his hammer was to him, but while he does, the weapons in Korg’s hands change between shots.
In one shot, he is holding some type of spear with a blunt end, but in the next frame, he is seen holding a weapon he calls a “wooden fork.” If that wasn’t bad enough, the weapons on the wall behind Korg also periodically change in between shots as well.
25 Color-Changing Costumes
A good chunk of Thor: Ragnarok takes place on the planet Sakaar. After Thor crash lands on the planet, he is quickly picked up by Valkyrie. While she eventually becomes an ally to Thor, her loyalty initially lies with the Grandmaster, as she brings him champions to fight in his gladiator matches.
Before Thor can fight, he gets his hair chopped off by none other than Stan Lee, but this is actually where a continuity error comes into play. At first, the guards holding Thor down in the chair are dressed in blue outfits, but in the next shot, their costumes change to purple.
24 Thor’s Eye
One of the most pivotal scenes in Thor: Ragnarok is the final battle between Thor and his sister Hela. Leading up to their big battle with the epic music of Led Zeppelin blaring in the background, Hela cuts out Thor’s eye in the previous scene.
While this wound significantly alters Thor’s appearance and makes him briefly wear an eye patch like his father Odin, his wound wouldn’t have looked anything like this. Given the type of weapon Hela used against her brother, his face would have been more cut up rather than just being a bloody eye socket.
23 Grandmaster’s Soldiers
Grandmaster is played by Jeff Goldblum and is the leader of the planet Sakaar. While Grandmaster is an important character in Thor: Ragnarok, his soldiers are really just extras. Given this fact, the filmmakers were probably more focused on keeping Goldblum’s character out of continuity errors rather than his soldiers.
When Grandmaster confronts Loki and Valkyrie in one of the scenes with a wide shot, an array of soldiers are seen behind him, but in the next shot, two female soldiers appear out of nowhere, which includes Rachel House’s Topaz character.
22 Hulk Transforms Back To Banner
While Bruce Banner is stuck in his Hulk form for a good portion of the movie, he eventually transforms back into his human body. This takes place after Thor and Hulk escape from Grandmaster’s grasp and make it back to the Quinjet.
After Hulk transforms back into Banner, he is still wearing his necklaces and clothing, but his belt disappears once Banner is human again. Hulk also damages several areas of the ship when he transforms back to Banner, but in the next scenes, the ship doesn’t appear to be damaged at all.
21 Valkyrie’s Gun Throwing Skills
Towards the end of the movie, Valkyrie goes back to the Gladiator’s headquarters to save Korg and Meek. After a short exchange between the two characters, Valkyrie throws a gun to Korg for him to use in battle.
The only problem is that when Valkyrie throws the gun to Korg, the barrel of the gun is on her left, but when Korg catches the gun, it's also on his left side. This means that the weapon would have had to flip mid-air, which seems impossible given how close she was to Korg and the way she threw the gun.
20 The Ceiling Of The Throne Room
It is a big shock in Thor: Ragnarok when Hela arrives on Asgard and reveals that many of the famous Asgardian stories are built on lies. Since Odin basically disowns his daughter Hela, Odin changed a lot of Asgard’s history to leave her out. When Hela comes back home, she destroys the ceiling of the throne room to reveal the stories of her conquests with her father.
Not only do the ceiling chunks happen to miss Hela and Skurge, but the destruction appears and disappears throughout the rest of the movie. In some scenes, the rubble can still be seen on the floor, but in others, it seems to have been swept up.
19 Loki And Valkyrie’s Fight
Since Thor: Ragnarok stands as both a superhero and action movie, there are a lot of epic fight scenes between characters. While Thor battles characters like Hela and Hulk, Valkyrie also battles Loki. When they are in the aircraft hangar on Sakaar, the two characters get into a skirmish and end up getting into a knife fight.
When Loki pushes Valkyrie away from him, she falls down on the blue and white tiles. In a continuous shot, her body position seems to have instantly moved, and Loki moves several feet forward as well.
18 Ship Passengers
Towards the end of the movie, the inhabitants of Asgard board the ship in order to flee from Hela and the coming destruction from Surtur. When they board the ship, Idris Elba’s character Heimdall is among the last to board the spacecraft, but in the following scenes, he is nowhere to be seen on the ship.
Also, when Skurge becomes a hero and pulls out his guns, the Asgardians are scattered around the ship’s door, but in the following shot, the door is completely clear.
17 The Grandmaster’s Melt Stick
While Topaz isn’t an extremely important character in Thor: Ragnarok, she does provide a few laughs here and there. In one scene after Grandmaster melts the person sitting next to Thor, he hands Topaz his remote and his melting stick.
In one shot, the remote is in her right hand and the melt stick in her left, but in the very next shot, the items shift to the opposite hands. While she could have just switched the items in her hands, she had no reason to do so and it would have been hard for her to switch the items' positions without setting one of them down.
16 Hulk’s Axe
One of the big draws of Thor: Ragnarok was that Marvel was finally adapting the Planet Hulk storyline. In the movie, fans finally got to see Thor and Hulk duke it out on the big screen again. Hulk and Thor are usually pretty evenly matched, but Hulk was equipped with a giant axe and hammer during the battle.
That being said, his axe changes size throughout the fight scene. At first, the axe is about the same size as the hammer, but after Hulk relies solely on the axe, it appears to have almost doubled in size.
15 Burnt Grass
Thor’s life was effectively turned upside down when he met his sister Hela. Not only does she effortlessly destroy Mjölnir, but she also ultimately causes Thor to get stuck on Sakaar, and eventually helps bring the end of Asgard.
During the scene where Thor and Loki meet Hela, Thor slams his umbrella into the ground, which turns his human clothes into his iconic costume. When he does this, lightning bolts surround him and Loki and severely burn the grass beneath them. It was no doubt a cool effect, but it doesn’t last, as the grass turns back to green for the next scenes.
14 Two Different Purple Ships?
Initially, the character Valkyrie is kind of seen as a drunk who wants nothing to do with helping Thor. She delivers him to Grandmaster early on in the movie, and seems to take pleasure in electrocuting him.
Later on in the film, she joins Thor’s team and is seen helping Thor destroy ships that Grandmaster sent after them. In one scene, Valkyrie jumps onto a purple ship to destroy it, but in the very next scene, Thor jumps onto the same ship and Valkyrie is nowhere in sight.
13 Thor’s Hair And Chains
Thor is immediately thrown into danger at the beginning of the movie. He is first seen as a prisoner of Surtur, who has him wrapped in chains to prevent him from escaping. During his discussion with the fire demon, the chains on his body move to different positions even though he barely moves, besides twirling around.
His hair also changes positions several times, as it is sometimes seen on his chin and other times his face is clear. It is a small mistake so many people probably missed it, but it is a continuity error none the less.
12 Grandmaster’s Building Disappears
Sometimes when a movie is created with mostly CGI, little props here and there will disappear as the movie progresses. In the case of Thor: Ragnarok, an entire building disappears.
When Thor jumps through the window in Hulk’s bedroom in Grandmaster’s building, he launches himself to the building directly across from the one he jumped from. He slides down for a second, and then jumps from that building to the ground, but when he jumps, Grandmaster’s building has disappeared from the scene entirely.
11 Banner’s Green Powder
After Hulk transforms himself back into Bruce Banner towards the middle of the movie, Thor has to try to keep him calm so that he doesn’t change into the Hulk again. This proves to be incredibly difficult, as the citizens on Sakaar are having some sort of festival for Hulk and throw green powder directly in Banner’s face.
While the powder seemed to stain his skin and clothes for a few scenes, it eventually disappears completely. While the powder would have faded away a bit, it's highly unlikely it would have just disappeared completely.
10 Valkyrie’s Binoculars
Valkyrie might have been a fan favorite character in Thor: Ragnarok, but the character still does have her fair share of continuity mistakes in the movie. One noticeable mistake happens during the battle between Thor and Hulk.
Valkyrie flies her ship above the arena to watch the match and takes a sip of her beverage. When she begins drinking, her left hand is empty, but when the camera switches back to a wide shot, she now has a set of binoculars in her hand. This is just one of the many continuity errors revolving around Valkyrie.
9 The Missing Statue
Loki and Thor have always had a complicated relationship ever since they were younger. Loki has tried to end Thor’s life on multiple occasions and even disguised himself as Odin on Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. Despite his multiple betrayals, though, Thor still teams up with Loki in Thor: Ragnarok.
During one scene on Sakaar, the two burst into a room and spray bullets into the Grandmaster’s guards that are standing in front of a purple statue. As they walk through the room, they continue to fire their guns, but now the statue has completely disappeared from the room.
8 Black Widow’s Message
Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff seemed to have a crush on each other starting in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Though this isn't explored further, Romanoff has always been the one with the ability to calm Hulk down. During Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hulk flies away in the Quinjet and Black Widow tries to get him to calm down by starting a video call.
This video recording shows up in Thor: Ragnarok but is very different than what appeared in Age of Ultron. The dialogue in Ragnarok includes a whole extra line about Ultron’s whereabouts that wasn’t previously heard in the Avengers movie.
7 Skurge’s Guns
Skurge, played by Karl Urban, is one of the new characters introduced in Thor: Ragnarok. He is initially the guard of the Bifrost Bridge in Heimdall’s absence, but he later joins forces with Hela, mainly out of fear.
At the end of the movie, Skurge turns his back on Hela to save the citizens of Asgard by firing his guns Des and Troy into Hela’s army. While the scene acts as Skurge’s redemption, his guns fire way more ammunition than what his gun’s clips would hold. That being said, just about every action movie suffers from this continuity error as well.
6 Valkyrie’s Hidden Super Power
During the end of the movie, many events take place on the Bifrost bridge. The citizens of Asgard use the bridge to flea their home, and Thor also fights Hela one last time on the bridge.
During one of the scenes featuring Loki, Valkyrie can clearly be seen all the way back by the spacecraft being used to get people off of the planet. That being said, in the very next shot, Valkyrie shows up out of nowhere directly behind Loki. Valkyrie might be quick on her feet, but she's not that quick.
5 The Shapeshifting Human
Odin might meet his demise during the events of Thor: Ragnarok, but before that happens, Thor and Loki travel to a nursing home. Loki admitted his father to the nursing home so that he could rule Asgard disguised as Odin.
During the scene, one of the background extras walking by is a man wearing a black hat, but the very next shot, the man has changed into a woman wearing a black hat. Sure it could possibly just be another extra, but the editing is flawless, making it seem like they tried to pass the extra off as the same person.
4 An Awkward Thor
Since Hulk was Grandmaster’s current champion, he got his very own room in Thor: Ragnarok. In one scene, Valkyrie comes to visit Hulk, where she is displeased to find Thor. Thor is standing by a shelf filled with bottles and awkwardly tries to rest his arm on the very front of the shelf.
It was a funny gag, but in the next shot, Thor is standing about three feet further from the front than where he was a second ago. He could have moved back three feet, but since it was again supposed to be a continuous shot, this is just a continuity error.
3 Heimdall’s Cloak
Since Heimdall met an untimely demise during Avengers: Infinity War, fans were likely disappointed that he didn’t have a bigger role in Thor: Ragnarok. Heimdall was seen a few times helping the civilians on Asgard, but that was pretty much the extent of his role.
During the end of the movie, the character fights some of Hela’s army, where he ditches his cloak to get more mobility. A few scenes later, though, he is wearing his cloak again. He could have gone to pick up his cloak after the battle, but when he boards the spaceship, his cloak is again missing.
2 Valkyrie's Face Paint
Throughout most of Thor: Ragnarok, Valkyrie wears white face paint, while she wears her casual street outfit. That being said, when she goes to adorn her iconic Valkyrie of Asgard outfit, her face paint completely disappears.
While she could have just rubbed it off in between scenes, the time that she was given to change costumes makes it just seem more like a continuity error than a purposeful costume change. After all, for most of the movie, many people were under the assumption that her white facepaint were tattoos, which ultimately turned out to not be true.
1 Thor And Loki’s “Get Help” Plan
Thor and Loki are often seen as enemies during the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but in Thor: Ragnarok, they end up joining forces to defeat Hela. When they are trying to escape Sakaar, they are in an elevator thinking of a plan of how they can trick the guards below them.
They settle on a plan called “Get Help,” where Thor pretends that Loki is hurt before hurling his brother into the guards. The plan ends up being effective, but it also creates a continuity error. When Loki lands on the ground, he lands in front of Thor on his left side, but when he stands up into the frame, he appears on the right.
