Westworld Season 3 Eying Antonio Banderas For Villain Role

Antonio Banderas is reportedly being eyed for a series regular role on season 3 of HBO's sci-fi series Westworld. The third season of Westworld, which showrunners promise will bring a "radical shift," has already added Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul to the cast. Season 2 of the series expanded on the sci-fi/Western world introduced in season 1, while bringing more layers of complexity to an already complicated narrative.

Employing a zig-zagging multi-timeline narrative approach, Westworld season 2 shook up the fates of its various characters, turning the previously timid Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) into a gun-toting bad-ass while reducing the formerly menacing Man in Black (Ed Harris) to a confused shell of his former self. And that's not even to mention what went on with Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) as he grappled with the mysteries of Westworld as well as his own nature. By season's end, so many things had been rearranged that some accused the show of becoming overly complicated. Even many of the actors had no idea what was happening as the series shifted between different characters and timelines on its way to a series of climactic developments that set up a whole new world for season 3.

Specifics about that third season of Westworld are of course being kept under wraps, but THS has learned of at least one new potential casting move, revealing that HBO is seeking to bring Antonio Banderas on board the series. Like everything else related to the show, the exact nature of Banderas' character is a secret, but THS says the actor would be playing a villain along the lines of Javier Bardem's character in the James Bond movie Skyfall.

What can fans glean about Banderas' character from that small hint? In Skyfall, Bardem played a cyberterrorist named Raoul Silva who turned out to be a former MI6 agent bent on getting revenge against his ex-colleagues. So, that would perhaps position Banderas as a one-time Delos employee on some kind of mission to gain retribution against the company. Given all the shady goings-on at Delos, it would not be a stretch to imagine a former worker at the company wanting to get revenge for some wrong or another. How this character would tie in with Dolores and her cohorts as they prepare to exit Westworld and unleash some mayhem in the real world remains to be seen.

Banderas of course would make a strong addition to what is already a very impressive and distinguished Westworld cast. After first making a name for himself in the films of legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, Banderas came to America where he quickly rose up the ranks of leading men, starring in everything from Robert Rodriguez's Desperado to the action smash The Mask of Zorro to the notorious turkey Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever. In recent years, Banderas has settled into a groove as an occasional action lead who also takes on prestige projects. Most recently, the actor played Pablo Picasso in season 2 of Genius, scoring an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
