After a couple of leaks hinted at PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds arriving on the PlayStation 4, Sony officially confirmed that the battle royale game is finally releasing on their platform. Not only is PUBG coming to PS4, but this version will come with Uncharted-themed skins for those who pre-order the game.
PUBG will be on PS4 almost a full year after the game released as a console exclusive on the Xbox One in an early access form. Before coming to consoles, PUBG was primarily played on PC, with a separate free-to-play mobile version releasing in early 2018. While PUBG gained praise and several accolades after its release, the game has since been overtaken by Fortnite in terms of concurrent players, with competition emerging from the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

While other battle royale games may have gotten a head start on the PlayStation 4, Sony is hoping to make up for it with some exclusive content on their version of PUBG. As described on the official PlayStation Blog, players who pre-order the game can get some exclusive skins, the most prominent being a Nathan Drake outfit. This costume is based on the character's desert attire in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Additionally, pre-order customers will be able to nab Ellie's backpack from The Last of Us, another Naughty Dog game. The Last of Us is due for a sequel on the PS4 in the future, titled The Last of Us Part II. Finally, PS4 users can enjoy a PUBG-themed avatar and theme if they pre-order the game.
For PS4 owners, this announcement may be too little, too late. Owners of other platforms have been able to enjoy PUBG for almost two years at this point, and since then, the battle royale itch has been scratched by the free-to-play Fortnite and Call of Duty's "Blackout" mode. It certainly doesn't help that the word of mouth on the Xbox One's technical performance has been largely negative, with graphical issues and choppy frame rates being cited by players. Despite enthusiasm from Sony and PUBG Corp., it is difficult to determine just what audience this release is for.
PUBG on all platforms is in need of "fixing," as PUBG Corp. admitted through a public and transparent "Fix PUBG" campaign. While PUBG was a trailblazer for the battle royale genre, the fact that Fortnite and Blackout run significantly better, especially on consoles as popular as the PS4, doesn't bode well for the longevity of PUBG. There is still an opportunity for the developers to turn things around and optimize their game properly for consoles, and perhaps then PUBG will find its PS4 audience.
