Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has taken up the mantle of the Red Hood. This is not the actor’s first brush with Batman’s former sidekick-turned-antihero. Ackles voiced the character in the beloved 2010 animated feature, Batman: Under the Red Hood. The film was based on the comic arc, “Under the Hood”, which saw Jason Todd resurrected many years after his brutal demise at the hands of the Joker.
Jason Todd was murdered by the Clown Prince of Crime in the 1988 story, “A Death in the Family”. The death of the second Robin was particularly notable for the way in which his fate was decided. There were two separate 900 numbers that readers could call to cast their vote of whether Todd should live or die. The character had never enjoyed the same popularity as Dick Grayson and when fans were given the option, they weren’t exactly kind. Although most readers failed to appreciate Todd as Robin, many have embraced him as the Red Hood.

Jensen Ackles has donned the Red Hood’s signature costume in a series of photos on his Instagram. The actor is well aware that fans want to see him as Jason Todd in live-action. Earlier this year, he added fuel to that fire when he posted a picture of himself posing next to the Red Hood’s suit. Todd is not even the only member of the Bat-family that viewers would love to see Ackles take on. After he was spotted on set for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, “Elseworlds”, speculation ran rampant that Ackles would be suiting up as Batman. However, Arrow star Stephen Amell quickly squashed that rumor.
Ackles has portrayed Dean Winchester on Supernatural since 2005, which recently entered season 14. But ever since Ackles lent his voice to Jason Todd, many have held on to hope that he would one day reprise the role in a live-action adaptation. It doesn’t look like that will become a reality any time soon, considering Jason Todd is already set to appear as Robin in DC Universe’s original series, Titans. Curran Walters has been cast in the role.
Ackles has always had a good sense of humor, so it’s likely that he’s just trolling fans. However, there is no denying that he’s got the acting chops to play a complex character like Jason Todd. DC’s film and television universes are separate, so just because Todd will be appearing in Titans doesn’t mean that he could never show up in a movie portrayed by someone else. Ackles did reveal that the reduced episode count of Supernatural season 14 was to give him and costar Jared Padalecki more time with their families, though. So, it would seem that right now Ackles has little time to appear as anyone other than Dean Winchester. Even still, fans can dream.
