Daredevil Season 3 Set Visit Report: Everything You Need To Know

Screen Rant visited the set of Marvel's Daredevil season 3, discussing Matt Murdock's (Charlie Cox) return with new showrunner Erik Oleson as well as key members of the cast and crew. Daredevil season 3 is set to premiere later this month on Netflix and already fans have gotten a good look at what to expect when the new episodes drop. Trailers for Daredevil season 3 focus on Matt Murdock's state of mind following his near-death experience in The Defenders, and highlighted the return of a major villain from season 1: Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio).

Earlier this year, Screen Rant had a chance to visit the set of Daredevil and speak to the series' new showrunner Erik Oleson - who takes over from season 1's Steven S. DeKnight and season 2's Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez - in addition to members of the cast including Cox, Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson) and Joanne Whalley (Sister Maggie Grace). We also had the opportunity to tour some key Daredevil season 3 sets and visit the costume department.

Overall, the theme of the Daredevil season 3 set visit was that the show is getting back to basics in the sense that the upcoming episodes return to the grounded tone that made the first season so beloved. In summing up season 3, Oleson said:

I wanted to tell a thriller that is somewhere, tonally, between season 1 of this show and The Sopranos. It is much darker, more character-driven. The action sequences are violent and explosive and very much Daredevil and yet there are real stakes in every action sequence this season. There are emotional decisions that are being made, there are characters who will die, there are fights Matt will lose. It is not a predictable season.

Below, we break down the biggest reveals from the set visit, and detail what fans can expect from the story of Daredevil season 3.

Wilson Fisk Is Back

D'Onofrio returns as Wilson Fisk in Daredevil season 3, and the Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen is looking to settle some scores. As revealed by Oleson, Fisk will be released from prison early in season 3 under a deal with the FBI where he offers actionable intelligence in exchange for keeping the love of his life, Vanessa, safe. Additionally as part of the deal, Fisk will live in a penthouse apartment, with 24-hour FBI surveillance. As revealed by the Daredevil set designer, this penthouse will start off barren but be filled out over the course of the season to reflect Fisk's taste and love of art.

Daredevil's new showrunner likens Fisk to a "spymaster" in season 3, which is inspired by Oleson's own father's work as a spymaster. And, like in season 1, Daredevil season 3 will pitt Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock against each other, paving the way for a rematch fans have wanted to see since Daredevil helped put Kingpin away in the first season.

In terms of how Foggy and Karen will deal with Kingpin's return, Elden Henson revealed he had yet to film a scene with D'Onofrio, potentially indicating Foggy and Fisk don't meet in season 3. Deborah Ann Woll on the other hand, revealed she had filmed a scene with D'Onofrio, and teased the tension fans can expect from the meeting of Karen Page and Wilson Fisk:

We were both so excited because he killed my Ben Urich and I killed his James Wesley so we have a mutual hate, I guess. ... But as actors I think we both have tremendous respect for one another and the opportunity to get to play with him and this brilliantly flamboyant performance that he gives, which is very much a contrast to Karen, so it was just great to get both of those energies in a room and see how they play off each other.

Daredevil Season 3 Refocuses On Core Characters

In addition to Fisk, Daredevil season 3 will focus back in on the show's core characters: Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page. According to Oleson, Matt will struggle at the start of the season with his abilities, which will have been affected by the fight at Midland Circle. As a result, Matt will be having a crisis of faith and a crisis of identity, all while trying to deal with Fisk again. Due to this journey, Matt will don a new black costume, though it's not the same as the season 1 black suit. Instead, Matt will make it himself using the vestments of the nuns and priests at the church where he's living in season 3. According to costume designer Elisabeth Vastola, there will be an episode in season 3 that specifically showcases how Matt assembles the costume, which she says is closer to street clothes than a superhero suit.

As for Foggy and Karen, season 3 dives deeper into their characters as well. Fans will get to meet Foggy's family and see inside his family butcher shop. The intricately built set of Nelson's Meats indicates it will be a key location in season 3. Further, the upcoming Daredevil episodes also finally give Karen Page a full backstory, with flashbacks to her life prior to moving to New York City. Though Oleson and Woll remained mum about what exactly happened in Karen's past, the actress did reveal it will explain Karen's actions throughout the first and second seasons. Another tidbit from Woll hinted that one of those flashbacks includes a scene of domestic violence.

Of course, while there will be a major focus on the returning characters in Daredevil season 3, there will also be a few new folks joining the show.

New Characters Joining Daredevil Season 3

Perhaps the biggest addition to Daredevil in season 3 is Joanne Whalley as Sister Maggie Grace, though the actress and Charlie Cox remained tightlipped on how she figures into the season. That said, we did learn she may not be who fans are expecting, according to Cox. But it was confirmed that season 3 will reveal more about Sister Maggie's relationship with Matt Murdock, as she takes in the broken man who used to be the young boy she helped raise.

Another new character in Daredevil season 3 is Jay Ali's Ray Nadeem, an FBI agent who becomes Fisk's handler when the Kingpin is released from prison. Oleson didn't offer much about Nadeem, but his relation to Fisk indicates he'll be a key character in season 3.

Lastly, Oleson teased a secondary villain that will be introduced in Daredevil season 3. The showrunner chose his words carefully to keep the identity of this new character hidden, but did reveal the secondary villain will pose a "very physical threat" to Matt Murdock. Further, this character will be wrapped up in the storylines of both Matt and Fisk, and will receive a great deal of focus so as to be a fully fleshed out character. So, it seems this new villain will be just as well-developed as Fisk was in season 1, and will act as an enemy that will physically fight Matt - whereas Matt's battle with Fisk will be more mental. In terms of who this secondary villain might be, rumors have pointed to Wilson Bethel playing Bullseye, but that was not confirmed on the Daredevil season 3 set visit.

Overall Impressions From The Daredevil Season 3 Set Visit

Daredevil season 3 seems to be returning a great deal to what critics and fans responded to in season 1. Wilson Fisk is back as an ideological foil to Matt Murdock, while the show again focuses on the more grounded aspects of the Daredevil character. Further, instead of introducing characters like Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) and Elektra (Élodie Yung) who were key to Daredevil spinoff shows The Punisher and The Defenders, everything in Daredevil season 3 will service the show's story. Additionally, according to Oleson, there won't be any crossovers with other Marvel Netflix series. As a result, Daredevil season 3 is about getting back to basics - in every sense of the term.

What that means for Daredevil season 3, whether or not it will be just as critically acclaimed as the first season, remains to be seen. But based on Screen Rant's visit to the set of Daredevil season 3, it's clear that Oleson has a clear idea in mind for the show that will honor what's happened in the previous seasons while taking the characters in new directions. And that clear idea may be exactly what Daredevil needs to refocus and remind fans why the Devil of Hell's Kitchen is such a central character in Netflix's Marvel universe.
