Hulu's Veronica Mars Revival Plot & Filming Details Reportedly Revealed

Hulu's upcoming Veronica Mars revival is expected to start filming in early 2019. Since the series cancellation in 2007, fans have been adamant about bringing it back. Two million dollars were raised in a Kickstarter campaign, which was eventually put towards a feature film in 2014. The movie picked up nearly a decade after the events of the show, with Veronica living in New York, and then being directed back home to Neptune, California. She eventually resolved to stay in her home town and resume her past life as a private investigator.

Last year, Kristen Bell stated that a revival would eventually happen, and that it was just a matter of working around conflicting schedules. It looks like the dream is finally coming true, with Hulu looking to officially revive Veronica Mars for another season, not just a movie. But the question is, assuming she's still in Neptune, what is Veronica up against now?

TVLine reports that production on an eight-episode series will begin filming in Los Angeles from late October to March of next year. Opposite Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, who played her father Keith Mars, is also expected to reprise his role for the revival series.

Alongside Rob Thomas, executive producers and writers Diane Ruggiero-Wright and Dan Etheridge are also expected to return. Ruggiero-Wright and Thomas co-wrote the script for the 2014 movie. Nothing has been confirmed about the new storyline, but it's been reported that Veronica and Keith will resume their heroics by facing off against a serial killer. Casting is said to be progress for an older African-American actress to play a Neptune police officer, who will likely be a foil for the father-daughter duo.

For Hulu, this move has big potential to pay off, especially when paired with the massive success of The Handmaid's Tale. Veronica Mars was a feminist murder-mystery that, despite its high school setting, never shied away from discussing misogyny, abuse, and sexual assault - often brutally. As in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which is also headed for a reboot, a popular girl's carefree life is torpedoed by dark events that leave her unable to ignore the injustice around her. Seeing young women thrive on defeating evil as solo protagonists is still a relatively marginal premise, but one that's being met with more and more success - as per fellow private investigator Jessica Jones. Meanwhile, on the CW (Veronica Mars' previous home), Supergirl and the Charmed reboot have heavily hyped up a Sunday night line up dedicated to female empowerment.

Depending on how legacy Veronica Mars fans react to the new season, a big expansion of Hulu original program may well happen in the near future. And it goes without saying that a more loyal fan base would be hard to come by.
