Ted Lasso season 2, episode 6 ends with a major twist, revealing that AFC Richmond player Sam Obisanya is the mystery man Rebecca has been messaging on the Bantr dating app. For the past couple of episodes, the show has been dropping clues that Ted was the one unknowingly flirting with the team’s owner, but that ended up not being the case. So now that Sam’s been revealed to the audience, what are the chances he and Rebecca could actually work out as a couple?
Obviously, before that question is answered, a lot of other things would need to happen. Bantr is entirely anonymous and, so far, both Sam and Rebecca have been skittish to share too much about themselves. But with the truth now revealed, It’s only a matter of time before they set up a first date and discover what’s actually going. Given the complicated nature of their existing relationship, that could make things tricky.
Would Rebecca and Sam choose to date after discovering each other’s identities? Unfortunately, there’s a lot that’s working against them. First and most obviously, Rebecca is technically Sam’s employer. The team owner having a romantic relationship with one of AFC Richmond’s star players would be an HR nightmare, and it would be a massive scandal if it got out to the media. There’s also the big age difference between the two – over twenty years – which, while not inherently a deal-breaker, would likely give Rebecca pause for thought. Her ex-husband Rupert was notorious for his trysts with much younger women, one of whom he ended up getting engaged to in season 1 after Rebecca left him. With Sam in his early twenties, he might cause Rebecca to have second thoughts, given her past with Rupert.
Despite all that, there’s obvious chemistry between Rebecca and Sam. They hit it off incredibly well on Bantr with nothing but honest conversation, discovering a number of shared interests and connecting on the same wavelength quite easily. The two have a strong rapport in person as well. Sam always makes a point of including Rebecca in team activities and has voiced his admiration for her on multiple occasions. And when he decided he could no longer represent Dubai Air, Rebecca immediately supported him and helped sort the situation out.
Ultimately, there are plenty of reasons for Sam and Rebecca to date in Ted Lasso season 2, and an equal number of reasons for them not to. The twist of their flirtations is a fun and fascinating development that could go any number of places, possibly causing some serious drama within the AFC Richmond team. It looks like Ted Lasso season 2 still has lots of surprises in store.
