Star Wars' Darth Krayt Made The Sith Stronger By Ending The Rule of Two

Since the Star Wars prequels, fans have known about the famous “Rule of Two” as a crucial Sith tenet, but Darth Krayt proved he could become more powerful by ending it. In the canon of Legends, the Sith disregards the tradition and makes his own dark path.

In the Star Wars galaxy, the Sith embody the dark side of the Force, but that doesn’t mean they are chaotic in nature. Relying on a set of rules and rituals similar to the Jedi Order, they have an ancient playbook of their own. Among those rules is the “Rule of Two,” enforcing the concept of a Sith master and apprentice. Originally established by Darth Bane and continuing into The Phantom Menace with Darth Sidious and Darth Maul, the philosophy has shaped the Sith’s legacy. However, the rule was eventually broken in the future, long after Return of the Jedi.

In Legends, Darth Krayt brings an end to the Sith’s Rule of Two, while retaining the “One Sith” by providing a combined vision. With his own purpose in mind, Darth Krayt resets the Sith according to his own ideas. Ruling the galaxy as a new emperor alongside his apprentice Darth Talon, Krayt enforced his new philosophy by his own will through the Force. Realizing that his death is imminent, Krayt understands that the Sith will fall apart without a strong figure like himself leading the pact. Instead of restraining the Sith to two members, Darth Krayt introduces a Sith army that threatens the galaxy.

After Darth Krayt’s death, the Rule of Two is reintroduced by his successor Darth Wredd. However, the galaxy remains changed by Krayt’s influence, as he proves there is another way to conquer planets and enforce his version of peace. It would be hard for the future Sith to deny that their kind had flourished under his ambitious leadership. Similar to Kylo Ren’s suggestion to forget the past and write a new destiny, Krayt was uncharacteristically unrestricted for a Sith to ancient tradition.

Although Star Wars under Disney has disregarded past continuity, rebranding it as “Legends,” stories still resonate in the minds of fans. As the same fans have gone onto write new comics set in ongoing canon, past stories are inevitably inspiring the franchise’s direction. Throughout Star Wars: Darth Vader, the history of the Sith in the galaxy has been explored a number of times, prompting the exploration of their future. When the fan favorite Sith, Darth Krayt, inevitably makes his return to comics, it would only be right for his army to make a comeback as well.
