Hocus Pocus 2 Can Make The Original Movie's Devil Joke Even Funnier

Hocus Pocus 2 brings the Sanderson Sisters back from their banishment to Hell, which can finally explain the original movie’s iconic devil joke and make it even funnier. Although Max, Allison, and Thora Birch's Dani Dennison sent Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson back to Hell at the end of Hocus Pocus in 1993, the sisters are coming back in 2022 along with the black flame candle that originally conjured them. The witches have spent another 29 years in Hell after Hocus Pocus, on top of the 300 years after 1693 during which they served their “master,” Satan. Hocus Pocus 2 may finally show the real Devil before they return to the mortal world.

As some pretty dark humor for a Disney movie in 1993, Hocus Pocus’ Sanderson Sisters continually make hilarious comments about their time in Hell, which is perfected when they mistake a man dressed up as Satan on Halloween for the real Devil. The sisters spot a man (played in a cameo by Garry Marshall) wearing a red cape, devil horns, and a red onesie as he hands out candy, so the original Hocus Pocus witches lean their heads back and scream, as they are reunited with their “master.” Hocus Pocus’ undead sisters spent the next bit of time flirting with and flattering the Salem husband, who they genuinely believed to be Satan.

Considering the Sanderson Sisters spent three centuries in Hell, their mistake hinted that the Devil actually physically resembled Garry Marshall. The Sanderson Sisters were last seen being vanquished back to Hell, so Hocus Pocus 2 could very easily pick up with the witches serving under the real Devil. If Hocus Pocus 2 finally shows what the real Devil looks like in a cameo, it would explain why they confused him with Garry Marshall’s character, who was really just an aging white guy with a Bronx accent. This would be a perfect callback to the original movie to kick off with, and work to make the Devil joke even funnier. If the Devil in the Salem-set Hocus Pocus 2 movie ends up resembling Garry Marshall, or even sounds like him, the sequel will be introducing a clever continuity joke.

Sadly, Garry Marshall passed away in 2016, so he won’t be able to reprise his role in Hocus Pocus 2. The same goes for his sister, director Penny Marshall, who cameoed as his curler-haired wife in the original movie, as she passed away in 2018. While Marshall’s Hocus Pocus Devil lookalike character won’t be able to return, Hocus Pocus 2 can still include the real Devil as an older man who looks exactly like him. Hocus Pocus never actually showed the Sanderson Sisters when in Hell, so the sequel could also show what their afterlives have been like for the past 29 years, and what they were required to do for Satan.

Since Winifred and Hocus Pocus' Sanderson witches have clearly done some despicable things, like murder and consume dozens of children to maintain their youth, it’s not surprising that they became personal servants of the Devil. Allison also reveals in Hocus Pocus that Satan personally gave Winifred and the Sandersons their book of occult spells, so the sequel could finally reveal what deal they made to receive the gift. The Devil bit was one of the funniest moments in the original movie, but there’s much more that can be unwrapped in Hocus Pocus 2 about their relationship with their “master,” what they’re required to do for him, why he has a Bronx accent, and whether they mentioned seeing and watching TV with “him” on Halloween night in Salem.
