ACNH Player's Graveyard For Past Villagers Is Frighteningly Huge

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently shared a short video of an eerie graveyard built on their island in honor of departed villagers. While villagers do not actually pass away in the Animal Crossing games, they will often leave the game for a number of different reasons. There are hundreds of villagers to interact within Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with more added by way of DLC and amiibo.

One of the most essential components of Animal Crossing is the charming collection of anthropomorphic animal villagers. Each villager has their own unique likes, dislikes, hobbies, and tastes, which players can learn and leverage to foster relationships with them. These charismatic creatures should not be taken for granted, though, as they will occasionally consider leaving the community behind for various personal reasons. Players can encourage them to leave or stay in these circumstances, allowing for a degree of control over who populates the town. New NPCs will also visit from time to time and can be convinced to stay, at times requiring the player to replace one of the existing residents with the newcomer. While this system is mostly random, players have some options at their disposal when it comes to making New Horizons villagers leave.

Departed villagers tend to leave little behind to remember them by, but Reddit user akiyineria found a thoughtful, albeit somewhat dark, way to commemorate these wayward companions. In a video shared on the Animal Crossing subreddit, akiyineria shows off a custom graveyard devoted to the memory of departed villagers. Each "tombstone" is decorated with a framed image of its corresponding villager, making it easy to keep track of who has come and gone. The graveyard is situated atop a stony enclosure by the sea and surrounded by bamboo trees, lending the area a sense of drama.

With over four hundred villagers to interact within Animal Crossing: New Horizons, akiyineria will likely need to expand the graveyard space if they hope to accommodate more island inhabitants. Some villagers, like New Horizons's cat characters, are more in demand than others, so it will be interesting to see how this graveyard chronicles these rare islanders if the project is to continue. Some gravestones are lacing pictures, which hints towards some new additions in the future.

While Animal Crossing villagers can come and go, builds like this one serve as a cute and creative way to remember them. More memorials of this kind are sure to surface online as time goes on-- though they might not lean into a creepy tone quite as much as this one.
