Why The Hawkeye Show Being A Comedy Could Save The Avengers

The upcoming Disney+ series Hawkeye looks to be an action-comedy, which can be beneficial to The Avengers as a franchise. The upcoming miniseries will have Clint Barton take his children to New York for Christmas to celebrate their resurrection during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Although Clint’s vacation is interrupted by gang violence, the series looks to be as comedic as it is action-packed, something that the Avengers need, all things considered.

Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, was a SHIELD Agents and one of the founding six members of The Avengers, becoming a world-famous superhero in 2012 when he proved invaluable to repelling the Chitauri invasion of New York. Although The Avengers films tended to have a lighthearted and quippy tone at first, they became far darker in their last two installments, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, with Thanos wiping out half of all life in the universe with the Infinity Stones.

Although the Avengers, along with nearly all other MCU heroes, defeated Thanos in Endgame, the Infinity Saga rendered half of the team’s founding members dead (or growing old in another timeline) and the other half traumatized. Hawkeye looks to be returning to the original, more lighthearted tone of The Avengers franchise. The much-needed levity not only helps return a core Avengers member to his quippy roots but also gives Hawkeye a similar tone to its comic source material.

As shown at the start of Endgame, Hawkeye lost his family to Thanos’ snap, sending him down a worrisome path as the anti-hero, Ronin. The Hulk did the unthinkable at the end of the film and used the Infinity Stones to return everybody killed by Thanos’ snap. Clint’s relief at having his family back after five years of mourning them justifies the lighter tone of the upcoming series.

Hawkeye appears heavily based on the 2012 Hawkeye comic series by Matt Fraction. This critically-acclaimed series took advantage of Clint Barton’s newfound popularity, thanks to The Avengers, and told a series of fast-paced, cleverly written, and comedic stories featuring both Clint and Kate Bishop. Hawkeye’s trailers include content from Fraction’s run, such as Lucky, the Pizza Dog, the Tracksuit Draculas, and issue 3’s car chase sequence. The upcoming Hawkeye will not only save The Avengers franchise by returning it to its comedic roots, but it’ll be following a celebrated comic series as well.
