Fictional characters that have high intelligence levels are often seen as cold or at least distantly observant of whats around them and what they have to do to get what they want. However, this detachment to feeling isn't always an accurate portrayal of how bright a character is.
The Originals, a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, features numerous supernatural characters, vampires, witches and werewolves with various powerful abilities, strengths or empathetic tendencies. That being said, only a few of them are smart enough to outwit their enemies and strategize to keep what they have and get what they need.
11 Jackson
Jackson is by no means unintelligent, but he's lived a much more simple life than others in The Originals. While other characters in the show have been living in human societies for hundreds of years, Jackson lived as a wolf for a large part of his life and doesn't care much for being in a city with other people that aren't his pack. While he is a great leader, he doesn't always make the best decisions and rarely ever has to calculate the outcome of a situation.
10 Davina
Davina is not the brightest character in this series. While she starts out as an extremely powerful witch, her rebellious nature and short temper control her more than her reasoning.
She is also one of the most gullible characters in the show considering Kol was able to lie to her about who he was for so long and she also made many foolish decisions that made it more difficult for Marcel to help her out when she got in trouble.
9 Cami
Cami is just a normal girl who gets put in strange circumstances that she doesn't really know how to navigate all too well. While she is quite emotionally intelligent and can often pick up on Klaus or Marcel's feelings, she never fully understand the vampire politics in the show. Not to mention, she doesn't always grasp the full gravity of what's going on even when she does find out about vampires, witches and werewolves.
8 Hayley
Hayley is hard for fans of The Originals to love and she's also not the best decision maker. Not only did she hook up and fall pregnant with Klaus' baby unintentionally, but she also gets herself put into some pretty difficult situations. While she does know how to keep a secret, she still lacks the ability to think ahead when it comes to anything besides protecting her daughter, Hope.
7 Rebekah
Rebekah, is generally just as strategic as Klaus, but she has a huge blind spot when it comes to the guys she loves. She knows how to torture other woman and get her vengeance, but when it comes to a mysterious bad guy she thinks she can make fall in love with her, she usually ends up vulnerable and feeling betrayed. She knows how to keep herself alive, but not how to have a trusting, strong romantic relationship.
6 Marcel
Marcel learned everything he knows from Klaus, but he can never stay as many steps ahead as the original hybrid can. He is a strong leader and he organized a whole system to stop the witches in New Orleans from using magic. Not to mention, Marcel strategically hates using his full name because it gives Klaus power over him since he named him. As a character overall, Marcel definitely has an air of intelligence, but he still isn't as quick as some of the other main characters in The Originals.
5 Vincent
Vincent is clever in many ways and he stands up for his own ideas because he knows he's often right. While his body did get taken and manipulated by Ester and Finn for almost 9 months, he still holds a position of leadership amongst the witches in New Orleans that is widely respected. His compassion leads him to often use his knowledge to help others rather than hurt him and so he's not often put in a position where he has to come up with a plan on the fly to save his own life.
4 Hope
Hope Mikaelson, even though she is one of the youngest characters in the series, had to grow up extremely fast. The only way for her to survive for so long is to be quick on her feet and learn how to handle any situation.
While she is also extremely powerful, Hope has the support of her family members who teach her all that they know. She has access to so much information both magical and not, so there's no doubt that she is one of the most intelligent characters in The Originals.
3 Freya
Freya has cast some of the most powerful spells in The Vampire Diaries franchise because her magical knowledge comes from one of the most powerful witches to ever live. While she's not completely up to date on all things 21st century, she is easily able to adapt to any situation and she often has a magical solution for anything. When Freya came into the series during season 2 she proved herself to be a character who can think strategically. Freya practically knows how to disarm an enemy by just talking to them.
2 Elijah
Even from his first introduction to the franchise, Elijah has been someone who can see any situation from multiple points of view without passing judgement. His loyalty to Klaus is only ever in question when Elijah believes that his brother is not being reasonable or considering his family when he makes decision. Elijah's intelligence is a factor of his kind heart and his ability to keep a calm head in even the most strenuous of circumstances.
1 Klaus
Klaus is one of best villains in The Vampire Diaries franchise as well as one of the most intelligent. He always seems to have a solution to every one of his problems. His constant paranoia works wonders as it forces him to think 10 steps ahead to avoid being betrayed by those he holds close. Klaus does explode every once in a while into a fit of rage, but he rarely ever does anything that he didn't already want to do.
