Netflix's new Western action movie The Harder They Fall boats an impressive cast including Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, and Regina King. These and other terrific actors bring their colorful characters to life in this gripping and violent revenge tale set in the Old West.
The Harder They Fall is filled with deadly and dangerous characters, most of whom can handle themselves in a fight. But some of these characters act before they think while others are more strategic, using their intelligence to fight and survive in the unforgiving Western world.
10 Wiley Escoe
Wiley Escoe is a character whose bad decisions allowed him to end up on the bad side of both the heroes and the villains. Though he was once a trusted lackey of the dangerous outlaw Rufus Buck, he made the foolish mistake of trying to double-cross him.
It seems like Wiley is smart enough to know that his decisions put him in trouble, but not smart enough to know when he's beaten. He even returns in an attempt to get revenge on Rufus only to hesitate when he has the upper hand and gets killed in the process.
9 Jim Beckworth
Jim Beckworth is the youngest member of the Nat Love Gang and the arrogance of youth is strong with him. He is an impressive quickdraw gunslinger which has given him a great deal of confidence that he is the best around.
However, it is with that confidence that Jim shows his ignorance. Instead of heeding the advice of wiser people around him, Jim takes foolhardy attempts to prove himself. He is naïve enough to think Cherokee Bill will fight fair which ends up costing Jim his life.
8 Mary Fields
Mary Fields is a strong and brave character who is easy to root for in the story. However, she also makes one of the most critical and dumbest decisions in the whole movie.
When told that Rufus Buck has established himself in the town of Redwood, Mary reasons that they need to check it out for themselves before attacking. She decides to stroll into town and meet with Rufus who immediately guesses what she is up to and uses her as a way to draw Nat Love out.
7 Bill Pickett
Bill Pickett is another character who gets by on his skills as a killer more than his intelligence. That is not to say he does anything particularly dumb in the movie, but he is also very much a follower rather than a leader.
Bill is a valuable person for Nat and the others to have on the team and has a good sense of battle. However, he is not the kind of man who is coming up with all the plans and his intelligence doesn't really stand out one way or another.
6 Nat Love
Nat Love makes for a dashing and entertaining cowboy hero in the movie, but he is certainly not the smartest character in The Harder They Fall. He is another character whose deadly skills get him out of more sticky situations than his intelligence.
In many instances, Nat will enter into a dangerous situation and just shoot his way out of it. He is able to get the upper hand on his enemies occasionally, but his plans still rely heavily on him just killing everyone in sight.
5 Trudy Smith
Though Trudy Smith is Rufus Buck's most loyal follower, she also seems to take more action than he does. She can be a brutal and powerful killer when she needs to be but also has an eerie calm about her that suggests she is smarter than everyone else.
While that may or may not be true, Trudy is yet another character who seems to think violence is more effective than strategy. Though she is usually on top of every situation, she failed to see Nat Love's double-cross coming.
4 Cuffee
Cuffee is one of the most likable members of the heroic gang and perhaps the toughest. But while the others lean on their lethal skills for survival, Cuffee at least seems to be more logical than the others.
As Cuffee explains early on, people's initial perception of her is dismissive and she is overlooked. She uses this to her advantage as she is constantly underestimated by her enemies. It is this tactic that allows her to best Cherokee Bill in a showdown.
3 Rufus Buck
The fact that Rufus Buck begins the movie as an imprisoned outlaw who manages to negotiate a full pardon speaks to his cunning. He can be as deadly and brutal as any of the other characters in the movie, but he also outthinks his enemies.
Rufus has a calm demeanor but is always looking for an opening to maneuver. Whenever his enemies hesitate for a moment, he takes advantage and takes control. The fact that he is so ruthless while also being a strategist proves how dangerous he really is.
2 Cherokee Bill
Though he is one of the quieter members of Buck's posse, Cherokee Bill seems to have a lot going on in his head. While some people think of him as a coward who guns defenseless people down, Bill proves that he is just a survivor.
When Jim tries to talk him into a quickdraw, Bill goes against the usual Western movie tropes and simply walks away. But when Jim insists, Bill shoots him dead without giving him a chance. He does the same thing to Pickett. And while it might not be honorable, Bill showed he was willing to play dirty to survive.
1 Bass Reeves
Based on the legendary lawman of the Old West, it makes sense that Bass Reeves is the smartest character in this movie. He is the most experienced in terms of the violent world these characters find themselves in and knows how to navigate it wisely.
When Bass sees the younger gunslingers like Jim spending too much time on their tricks and looking fancy, he tries to warn them that stuff will get them killed. Instead, Bass keeps a measured and level-headed approach to this dangerous world which is why he has remained so formidable for so long.
