Survivor: The Most Iconic Failed Showmances | Screen Rant

Survivor has produced many interesting storylines over the past 20+ years. The content is unlimited when a handful of strangers are forced to compete against one another on a desert island. Things get even more interesting when said strangers start aligning with one another or develop romantic feelings for each other.

The most famous showmance (that is, a romance that played out on the show) was of course Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich who fell in love after meeting on Survivor: All-Stars. The power duo took control of that season and then married and had four beautiful daughters, while every couple to emerge from the show since then has tried their best to live up to them. Unfortunately, a lot of these couples have failed and become iconic for their inability to become the next Romber.

A lot of Survivor fans don't even remember Mary Sartain and Mikey Bortone. That's because they were both voted out before the merge on Survivor: Micronesia, but have gained a lot of meme-worthy attention of the Survivor subreddit due to their failed showmance and the fact that they were so unmemorable as contestants.

The pair were targeted out of fear of them becoming the next big power couple, despite neither of them making any moves to prove that rumor true. Mary got the short-end of the stick when her tribe voted her out to make Mikey weaker, and then sent him packing just a few tribal councils later.

Jeff Wilson and Kim Mullen were members of the infamously cursed Survivor tribe, Ulong. They quickly aligned and openly flirted with one another on the island, despite Rob and Amber doing the same thing two seasons prior. When Ulong continued losing challenges, Kim and Jeff's days became numbered.

Their alliance never really took off, as they failed to connect with other members of their tribe. Jeff's leg injury didn't help matters either, and Kim actually assisted in voting him out because of it. Kim was eliminated soon after, their showmance dying out faster than the Ulong tribe.

Jessica Johnston and Cole Medders provided fans with a sweet showmance on the 35th season of the show. The pair were open on their crushes on one another, with Jessica going as far as to kiss Cole on the cheek from time to time.

Cole and Jessica's flirtatious alliance was short-lived when they were both targeted shortly after the merge, leading to their eliminations and placements on the jury. Post-show, Jessica shared that their romance didn't survive the show or real life.

Dean Kowalski and Chelsea Walker were another showmance that didn't actually begin as one. The pair had a couple of private conversations that were mistaken by their tribe-mates as flirting, and it got them in big trouble.

Dean and Chelsea never got the chance to see if there were romantic sparks between them. Their tribe decided that Chelsea was the one pulling the strings in their duo and rallied to get her voted out as quickly as possible. While Dean went on to become the runner-up that season, Chelsea was sent on the pre-jury trip without him.

Figgy and Taylor clearly didn't read the Survivor rulebook before coming on the show, because they took their showmance to a whole new level by openly declaring their affection for each other in front of their allies and enemies on the 33rd season of the show.

This bold choice ultimately led to their respective downfalls, Figgy getting the harsher end of the things as she was sent packing before the merge. When the cast was brought back together for the live reunion show, Taylor and Figgy revealed that they did not continue their passionate romance after the show, and were barely on speaking terms.

Before Candice Cody competed on Survivor with her husband John for Blood Vs Water, she had an island fling with fellow contestant Adam Gentry.

The pair connected right out of the gate and maintained a close allegiance even after tribe swaps and mutinies. Their most iconic moment came when Candice was voted out and she passionately kissed Adam as she grabbed her torch, something that made Jeff Probst and fans at home roll their eyes. Ultimately their romance didn't pan out, and they both ended up losing the game.

Whitney Duncan and Keith Tollefsen's relationship actually came out stronger after their season of Survivor. They've gone on to compete on The Amazing Race together, and are married to this day. However, their showmance didn't do them any favors while on the show.

Despite their strong attraction to one another and allegiance to their starting tribe, Whitney and Keith were picked off after the merge by Coach's majority alliance. Refusing to make allies with anyone else, they became members of the jury and watched as Coach, Sophie, and Albert dominated the game.

Dan Rengering made his crush on fellow castaway Kara Kay pretty clear from the first day on the beach of Survivor: David Vs Goliath. He called her "Supergirl" and attempted to form the next great showmance with her.

Unfortunately for Dan, Kara was just not interested in the police officer. They ended up on opposing sides, with Dan feeling betrayed by her after the show when it was revealed that she was dating their other tribemate, Alec Merlino. Despite Dan's best attempts to make them the first successful showmance since Rob and Amber, the pair will always be remembered for what could have been and what never was.

Survivor winners Michele Fitzgerald and Wendell Holland dated briefly before competing on Winners At War together. Their relationship ended on odd terms, making any chance at them aligning on the all-winners season unlikely. However, the two put aside their differences briefly to work together and eliminate Yul Kwon, a huge threat on their tribe.

Michele and Wendell's relationships problems were never explicitly stated on the show, but it was clear that there was some unresolved tension between them. Their inability to work with each other post-merge led to Wendell's downfall, and a regret Michele would later have about the way their friendship was portrayed in editing.

Colby Donaldson and Jerri Manthey first competed in the same tribe on the second season of Survivor. Jerri made her feelings for the all-American cowboy very clear from the beginning, citing how attractive and charming she found him. Colby, on the other hand, didn't want anything to do with Jerri's villainous attitude and cast her aside.

Despite Jerri's attempts at flirting with Colby and asking him to align with her and Amber, he refused. This failed showmance led to a rivalry that spanned many seasons of Survivor, with Jerri finally getting her redemption arc on Heroes Vs Villains and proving that she was capable of dominating the game without Colby on her side.
