Stephen King's The Boogeyman Movie In Development From Host Director

Stephen King's The Boogeyman is getting a film adaptation with Host and Dashcam co-writer/director Rob Savage at the helm. Originally published in 1973 in an issue of the magazine Cavalier and later included as part of The Night Shift collection in 1978, the story centers on a local man visiting a psychiatrist and recounting how his children were seemingly killed by the titular creature. As he tell the doctor his story, however, he begins to suspect something sinister is at play in the present day.

The Boogeyman has previously been adapted for the screen twice, both with short films from Jeff C. Shiro in 1982 and Gerard Lough in 2010. A proper studio adaptation was put in the works in 2018 when A Quiet Place writing duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods revealed they were writing a film and assured a year later that the project was still in the works at 20th Century Fox, in spite of the Disney-Fox merger. Having expressed uncertainty last year about the status of The Boogeyman adaptation, King fans now have exciting news for the film.

After over a year of silence on the project, Deadline has brought word that Hulu is officially moving forward with a film adaptation of Stephen King's The Boogeyman. The streaming platform is partnering with 20th Century Studios for the movie and have landed Rob Savage for the director's chair. Savage will be shooting on a script being written by Black Swan's Mark Heyman from previous drafts penned by Beck & Woods and Akela Cooper.

While the announcement that Beck and Woods are no longer scripting The Boogeyman may come as a disappointment to some, the crew behind the new iteration of the film is sure to build anticipation. Savage burst on to the scene last year with the Shudder horror film Host, filmed entirely over Zoom in the midst of the pandemic that received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, holding a rare 100 percent "Certified Fresh" rating from critics. This success subsequently saw Savage land a three-picture deal with indie horror powerhouse studio Blumhouse, which began with similarly formatted Dashcam that premiered at at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.

The Boogeyman not only marks the latest King project to get a film adaptation but also the latest from his Night Shift collection to get the big screen treatment. The bestseller spawned the movies Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Maximum Overdrive, Graveyard Shift, The Mangler and The Lawnmower Man, as well as the Adrien Brody-led series Chapelwaite. Only time will tell how The Boogeyman fares with critics and audiences in comparison to prior Night Shift adaptations.
