Quentin Tarantino Selling 7 Never-Before-Seen Pulp Fiction Scenes As NFTs

Quentin Tarantino is auctioning off seven never-before-seen Pulp Fiction scenes as NFTs. Tarantino’s breakthrough crime film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and scored the writer-director his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Indeed it’s hard to overstate the influence of Pulp Fiction when it first arrived back in 1994. Decades later the film is still considered a classic, and Tarantino himself is still making movies while also crossing over to the world of literature with his recent novelization of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. It remains to be seen what Tarantino will do for his promised tenth and final feature film but the director recently teased some possibilities, including Kill Bill 3 or a spaghetti-Western comedy.

While he makes up his mind what to do for his next film, Tarantino is keeping busy by diving into the world of cryptocurrency and NFTs. The filmmaker recently announced that he’s giving wealthy fans an opportunity at a truly unique experience by auctioning off seven uncut and previously unseen Pulp Fiction scenes as Secret NFTs via the NFT market OpenSea (via IndieWire). In addition to the scenes, the NFTs will also “include the uncut first handwritten scripts of ‘Pulp Fiction’ and exclusive custom commentary from Tarantino, revealing secrets about the film and its creator.” The announcement adds, “The public metadata of the NFT — the ‘front cover’ of this exclusive content — is rare in its own right: a unique, never-before-seen, public-facing work of art.”

In his own statement Tarantino said, “I’m excited to be presenting these exclusive scenes from ‘Pulp Fiction’ to fans. Secret Network and Secret NFTs provide a whole new world of connecting fans and artists and I’m thrilled to be a part of that.” NFTs or “non-fungible tokens” are of course becoming increasingly popular with artists looking to sell their works to willing buyers who desire to own authentically unique digital objects. The NFT phenomenon is controversial however as it uses blockchain technology that many argue is harmful to the environment. Visual artists have already made wide use of NFTs to sell digital works and it’s interesting to see filmmakers like Tarantino embracing the technology as well.

Of course like any work of art (or anything else for that matter) an NFT is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. It remains to be seen what kind of price Tarantino’s offering fetches at auction, but it’s likely there are more than a few well-off Tarantino fans out there willing to lay out a lot of cash to own a piece of the seminal American classic Pulp Fiction that is theirs and theirs alone. But where the NFT phenomenon goes from here when it comes to creating such unique film-related experiences is anyone’s guess. At some point in the future, someone will probably make an entire movie and offer it as an NFT, in hopes some billionaire will pay money to own it. One day movies may just become like great paintings hanging in rich people’s virtual living rooms. Though real paintings of course don’t consume huge amounts of energy and contribute to climate change.
