No Way Home Trailer Shows Return Of Doc Ock Spider-Man 2 Weapon

A new Spider-Man: No Way Home TV spot includes new footage featuring Doctor Octopus’ spiked tentacle from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Following the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s alternate timelines/multiversal lore established in Avengers: Endgame, Loki, and What If…?, Marvel Studios and Sony’s third Spider-Man film is easily the most anticipated film of 2021. In addition to continuing Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) story after Spider-Man: Far From HomeSpider-Man: No Way Home is confirmed to bring back villains from Sony’s past, including Sandman, Lizard, Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and, of course, Doc Ock (Alfred Molina).

Ever Since Molina’s character appeared at the end of the first trailer, Doc Ock has been at the center of No Way Home’s marketing campaign. No Way Home's second trailer officially confirmed the inclusion of the remaining four villains after the first teaser only hinted at their involvement. Still, Doc Ock is the most prominent “villain” in a trailer showcasing a handful of characters who died while fighting Spider-Man in previous films (not including Sandman). The beginning of the second trailer essentially picks up where the initial trailer left off, with Holland’s web-slinger and Molina’s Doc Ock fighting on a bridge.

A new No Way Home TV spot shows the return of Doc Ock’s weapon from Spider-Man 2. The TV spot was shared by Luiz Fernando on Twitter and sees the good doctor whip out his spike tentacle he famously utilized while fighting Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in 2004. The spot also includes a couple of new lines of dialogue spoken by Holland not featured in the trailer. Check it out below:

Seeing a familiar aspect of Doc Ock’s tentacles no doubt amplifies No Way Home’s already-impressive nostalgia factor. Bringing villains from Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films into the MCU means a lot to longtime fans of the superhero genre. The move will also be heavily scrutinized, especially if the return of Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men isn’t the foregone conclusion many expect. Some were even displeased by Doc Ock’s new CGI tentacles as opposed to the puppetry used in Spider-Man 2.

One of the most-talked-about aspects of No Way Home’s newest footage concerns Doc Ock’s ability to absorb the nanotechnology from the Iron Spider suit. During the scene on the bridge, Doc Ock seemingly infuses his tentacles with Tony Stark's nanotech. However, later in the trailer, when he’s in Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) Sanctum, his tentacles don’t appear to have nanotechnology anymore. It’ll be interesting to see what role Doc Ock plays in No Way Home. At the end of Spider-Man 2, the character realized the error of his ways before sacrificing himself to save New York City. It’s unclear if Doc Ock remembers this or if he’s even the same Doc Ock. If he is and does, then he may end up fighting alongside our heroes. Regardless, it’ll be fascinating to see how much (if any) new footage is included in future TV spots. Given the studio’s affinity for secrecy thus far, Doc Ock’s Spider-Man 2 weapon may be the last piece of new footage fans get before No Way Home’s release on December 17th.
