A WWE fan wants to see Mortal Kombat 12's roster include ring legends Mick Foley and Kane as guest fighters. Series developer NetherRealm Studios has hinted it might be working on a new installment of its flagship fighting game franchise, with recent leaks suggesting MK12 is NetherRealm’s top priority over other highly-requested projects like Injustice 3 or a rumored Marvel game.
Naturally, Mortal Kombat community speculation about the Mortal Kombat 12 roster's characters has already taken off, especially after the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC expansion shook up the series' frequency of multimedia crossovers. A popular trend which many hope will continue in MK12 is the previous entries' strong assortment of DLC guest characters from films, comics, and other video games. MK11 excelled in this regard, featuring surprise appearances from the Joker, Spawn, Rambo, Terminator, and Robocop in a wave of post-launch content.
Now, one fan is asking NetherRealm to look into the world of sports for two Mortal Kombat 12 guest characters on their wishlist. On Reddit's Mortal Kombat subreddit, user Sea_Farm8520 requests that classic WWE superstars Mick Foley and Kane be included as guest DLC fighters. Some commenters consider the proposition to be an interesting idea, but others expressed doubt it could happen due to the WWE's recent emphasis on maintaining a family-friendly image - which lies in stark contrast to the mid-90's era of wrestling Kane and Foley were best-known for. Despite this, a few comments speculate NetherRealm would be more likely to include any wrestlers as alternate skins for existing MK12 characters rather than design original models and moves for each, with some possibilities including John Cena standing in for Johnny Cage and The Rock as Geras.
While no WWE wrestlers have featured in any Mortal Kombat or Injustice games to date, NetherRealm did develop a short-lived WWE-based fighting game for mobile titled WWE Immortals back in 2015. It featured high-fantasy reimaginings of top WWE superstars, but it was shut down in 2019. On the other hand, WWE is poised to reenter the gaming landscape after a nearly two-year hiatus with the upcoming WWE 2K22, a wrestling title promising to put the franchise back on track following the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20. Developer Visual Concepts just recently showed off a new WWE 2K22 trailer showcasing updated character models, which could hypothetically provide a basis for WWE stars in MK12.
While WWE wrestlers do not try to kill their opponents like Mortal Kombat characters do, both properties involve outlandish personas competing against one another in bouts of physical combat - sometimes with weapons. Kane’s fictional backstory involving familial betrayal and supernatural powers wouldn’t be too out of place compared to those of Mortal Kombat characters Scorpion and Sub Zero, and Mick Foley's Mankind and Cactus Jack guises are famous for being particularly chaotic and violent. Still, both these combatants would be unorthodox choices for guest characters in Mortal Kombat 12 - but NetherRealm has proven itself to be full of surprises when it comes to who might show up in its classic fighting game series.
