During Marvel's 2015’s Secret Wars event, the undead forces known as Marvel Zombies and the robotic legion that is Ultron joined forces to create Magneto’s grossest look ever. Magneto is usually a pretty scary guy in general, but it’s a wonder what decaying flesh and machine parts can do to really up a guy’s scare factor.
Shown way back in 2015 during the Age of Ultron vs. Marvel Zombies miniseries, by James Robinson and Steve Pugh, this tie-in arc, set during the epic line-wide crossover event titled Secret Wars, by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, sees Magneto getting his most disgusting form thanks to the literal machinations of the Avengers robo-baddie, Ultron. Living on a planet called Battleworld, where the stitched together locations of what remains of the Marvel multiverse reside after God Emperor Doom saved them from annihilation, the Marvel Zombie horde ruling over The Deadlands, and the Ultron populated area of Perfection have been at war with one another for quite some time.
Finally realizing if they joined forces instead of squabbling amongst themselves that they would be able to conquer all of Battleworld for both sides, Ultron proposes a wild idea that would see him utilize his love of creating death bots mixed with the insatiable and deadly hunger of the Marvel Zombie horde. First testing out his mad-scientist proposal by merging X-Men villain, Sabretooth, with one of his Ultron drones, Ultron proves that not only can his madcap plan work, but the results are far better than anyone could have suspected, especially for Magneto.
Choosing the Master of Magnetism as the spokesperson for the undead army, Ultron puts the horde through their cybernetic transformation throes, and as the walking dead breach the barriers of a nearby survivor camp, Magneto’s grossest form is revealed to be that of a shuffling, dead thing mixed with mechanized cyborg-like features. Complete with metal legs and a rotten body that’s lanky and skeletal, Magneto still sports his iconic purple cape and red helmet, just with the lipless smile of chattering teeth hidden underneath.
Effectively co-managing the giant zombie hive mind with Ultron, Magneto keeping his usual tactical wits about him while sporting a more deadly, disgusting, and decaying look makes him just as dangerous as ever, if not even more so now with an insatiable appetite for flesh. Usually changing his color scheme or the design of his armor and helmet more often than anything else, seeing this X-villain in all of his metallic zombie glory is a gross — and effective — character form that still holds up to this day.
Secret Wars did a lot for the Marvel Universe at the time of its publication with the mash-up of zombies and sentient robots ending up being one of the coolest beats of that wildly epic story. And while Magneto might be the Master of Magnetism on a normal day, when mixed with Marvel Zombies and Ultron, he’s more the Master of Meat and Machine than anything else.
