K-Pop Hunks To Star In New Netflix Video Game-esque Reality TV Show

K-pop fans will be excited to hear that Netflix has created a new reality TV show called New World that stars EXO's Kai as well as several members of Super Junior. The show is latest in the slew South Korean TV Netflix original shows that the platform has added over the past few years. Netflix has found that their Korean offerings, especially K-dramas, have international appeal, with shows like Sweet Home, Kingdom, and of course, Squid Game finding fans across the globe.

Kai, who is the biggest draw for the new show, has performed in popular K-pop boyband EXO for about a decade now. The 27-year-old, whose real name is Kim Jong-in, is Korean-Chinese, and is also part of super-group Super M. While Kai has some acting experience, starring in shows like Choco Bank (2016), Andante (2017), and Spring Has Come (2018), he's best known for being one of the most talented K-pop dancers to ever grace the stage. Fans may also be excited to see Heechul, Lee Seung-gi, Park Na-rae, Eun Ji-won and Jo Bo-ah of K-pop band Super Junior star in the new show.

In a trailer for New World released Tuesday, a voiceover tells contestants that the "new world" is "a utopia for the chosen ones." The voice tells them that over the course of six days, they will have opportunities to earn money, and that at the end of the six days, that money will become actual Korean won. The setting for the show looks to be a lavish property with a mansion, like many reality TV shows, with one contestant commenting in the trailer, "Am I in the new world, or in heaven?" But there's definitely also some fantasy and video game elements to what the players will be encountering, as the trailer seems to show some type of virtual or augmented reality. The voiceover even tells players that they "will experience things out of this world."

While the setting for New World looks captivating and the star-studded cast will have fan girls squealing, there's still so many questions to be answered about the show that could impact how interesting or boring it is. Will only one person be able to collect their money? What will the challenges be like? Can players sabotage one another? What kind of "out of this world" things will the players encounter? The trailer mentions "a shadow shop full of wonders," which sounds extremely intriguing, and that the players will get clues to what the games are, both of which sound promising in terms of entertainment value.

New World was created by Cho Hyo-Jin, who was also behind well-liked Netflix Korean game shows Busted! and TwogetherThe fact that Netflix has granted him yet another show is a good sign. It also seems like it can't be a coincidence that, according to British music magazine NME, Kai is supposed to release a new solo album at the end of November, which is quite near the show's release date of Nov. 20. Perhaps Kai is hoping to garner some more international fans before this next music drop.

New World premieres on Netflix on Nov. 20, 2021.
