Warning! Spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Marvel Comics
Tony Stark has equipped his Iron Man suits with many safety protocols in case he finds himself in dangerous situations - and he just showed off a seemingly new feature, the "clamshell protocol." In The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Marvel Comics, Iron Man ends up in two different dangerous situations that force him to eject his body from his armor.
After Doctor Strange's death, the Avengers stepped up in his absence as magical threats from across the universe have emerged. With Earth more vulnerable to magic attacks after Strange's barrier around Earth fell after his death, Earth's Mightiest Heroes have been busy dealing with numerous new attacks. One of those attacks was a portal to the Nexus of All Realities opening up on their planet, leading to an army of Juggernauts coming through. A group of villains attempted to blow up the Nexus with a nuclear weapon but were killed by the Juggernauts - who quickly moved to New York.
In The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Alex Paknadel, Ryan Bodenheim, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Cory Petit, Iron Man and the Avengers visit the location where the portal to the Nexus of Realities has opened up. However, all of the team - save Iron Man - leave the area after a group of Juggernauts are seen causing damage in the city. Meanwhile, Iron Man uses his armor to disarm the nuke left at the scene. However, when he sees a group of insects trying to crawl inside his armor (reminding him of being recently attacked by the Three Mothers), he activates the "clamshell protocol," which ejects him from his armor straight into the swamp.
Iron Man might have embarrassed himself when nobody was watching. Still, given he just endured a painful, terrifying insect attack from one of the Three Mothers, the sight of insects understandably scared him. Iron Man would use the "clamshell protocol" again later in the comic, as he protects the Juggernaut construct's spire from Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, taking a serious blow in the process. However, it undoubtedly would have been worse if he didn't eject from his armor.
The "clamshell protocol" is basically a much more intense eject button for Iron Man and serves as an important last line of defense should he need to get out of his suit fast. In this case, Iron Man showed how it could be used in two totally different situations - albeit, one was much more terrifying than the other. The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Marvel Comics is in comic book stores now.
