Hogwarts Legacy is the highly anticipated open-world action RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and while there's still much we don't know about the title, there are some key details that have emerged since it was first announced. Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Interactive, Hogwarts Legacy will launch sometime in 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series S/X. Fans of the Harry Potter franchise have been waiting for such a game to be produced for years, which means that expectations for Hogwarts Legacy are high.
Hogwarts Legacy was heavily leaked up to two years before the reveal trailer was published. These leaks featured screenshots of an intricate character creation tool and gameplay footage that turned out to be very similar to the gameplay that was unveiled in the official trailer in 2020. However, further details surrounding character customization and gameplay are still forthcoming, meaning players know fairly little about Hogwarts Legacy's most intricate details.
It has been over a year since the game's announcement and reveal trailer, and while most fans were expecting the unreleased title to be featured at E3 2021, WB Games focused on Back 4 Blood instead, sharing no new updates regarding the production of Hogwarts Legacy. With a postponed release to 2022 and some hints dropped in recent interviews and leaks regarding the official launch date, what we know about this title is still heavily centered on what was initially unveiled when the game was first announced.
Hogwarts Legacy was originally supposed to be released in late 2021, but in January that same year, Portkey games announced on Twitter that the game would be delayed until 2022, stating that "creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount". Although no concrete release date has been announced since then, last week's Nvidia GeForce Now leak listed March 8th, 2022 as Hogwarts Legacy's new release date. Although the leaked data hasn't been confirmed, there's reason to believe it could be accurate, given that another leak from Nvidia that happened earlier in 2021 correctly predicted a number of the year's releases.
Aside from Nvidia's controversial leak, a recent Toy World Magazine interview with Warner Bros.' Consumer Products General Manager, Rachel Wakley, gave players more insight into a potential release window for the game's release. In the interview, Wakley mentions that the first major release of 2022 will be the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore, and the second release of the year will be Hogwarts Legacy. If this is accurate, the release date leaked on Nvidia might not be correct. The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts series will be released on April 15th 2022, so it's possible that Hogwarts Legacy will launch in the second half of 2022, after that date.
Hogwarts Legacy will take place in the 1800s, with players taking on the role of a student who has received a late attendance letter for Hogwarts. Tho story will lead them to discover that they have an unusual ability to master Ancient Magic, and will eventually have to decide to either protect the secret or give in to temptation and wield dark magic. Although the game will be set in the Wizarding World that fans have known and loved for years, the story of Hogwarts Legacy is a completely new narrative created by Avalanche, with new characters and new storylines.
Even if the story won't be in any way linked to the characters fans remember from the books and films, it may possess tonal similarities. We know that Hogwarts Legacy will focus on ancient magic that only your character is able to understand and use, and that player choices will be one of the main pillars of the game's mechanics. Knowing this, it is only logical to assume that the same fight between good and evil that fans will remember from the books will play a significant role in the game's narrative, and will likely represent a more internal struggle in the player's character decisions when it comes to giving in to the temptation of evil, or doing the right thing.
Hogwarts Legacy has been officially described as "an immersive, open-world RPG", so players can expect that it will involve a fair amount of exploration, possibly to known locations of the Wizarding World. The game won't be limited to just Hogwarts itself, so it could include places that have already been spotted in the reveal trailer, such as Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, and the Forbidden Forest. One of the first questions players had after the trailer reveal was whether Hogwarts Legacy would be single-player or some kind of online experience, but there are currently no plans from Avalance to add a multiplayer mode.
Avalanche has confirmed that players will be able to level up abilities for their characters, master spells, and perfect combat skills, as well as taming beasts and "select companions to help them face off against deadly enemies". Although we still don't know what these companions will be, it is possible that these could be other Hogwarts students or even tamed beasts. Missions and scenarios will also be an essential part of the game, involving player choices that are likely to play into the main story, which revolves around the familiar fight between good and evil.
Hogwarts Legacy will feature a character creation tool for players to customize their witch or wizard. Avalanche is yet to reveal more information regarding what level of customization the character creation tool will have. However, we do know that the players will be able to choose their character's voice, gender, and body type, and it is likely that different outfits and uniforms will also be available. The characters featured in the reveal trailer can be seen sporting different versions of Hogwarts uniforms which include the classic, dark robe-and-cloak, but also a new brown waistcoat suit alteration with the house's emblem embroidered on the side, which plays nicely into the era the story takes place in.
Most of what we currently know about Hogwarts Legacy stems from the trailer that was revealed in September 2020 alongside Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal, and the official information that was disclosed alongside it. The reveal trailer gave players and fans a first look at the Wizarding World of the game, as well as the characters and storylines that will feature. The footage showed some of the features players will see in the game, such as taming beasts, brewing potions, fighting dragons, and mastering spells. Little has been revealed in the year since, but fans can expect more details to emerge as Hogwarts Legacy's 2022 release date nears.
