GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Gets 0.5 User Score On Metacritic

The long-rumored and now much-maligned Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is currently being review-bombed by unhappy gamers on Metacritic. The collection of remastered classic games launched on all platforms earlier this week and has been plagued by bugs, poor design choices, and a host of other problems. The state of the game is so bad that droves of GTA players have been requesting refunds following its release.

Since it dropped on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch on November 11, the GTA Trilogy has been in the news owing to various graphical glitches and the removal of features like San Andreas's local co-op mode. Many long-time fans were also disappointed by the truncation of the games' once-iconic soundtracks, a decision likely made due to complex licensing issues. On a somewhat less objective note, players have also been unhappy with a lot of the remodeled character designs, which appear decidedly more cartoonish and uncanny. The PC version of this collection seems to have suffered the most, with Rockstar pulling the GTA Trilogy from sale just days after its release. Rockstar has attributed this to issues with its launcher, but gamers have speculated that it could be connected to the myriad refund requests and bugs.

Scorned fans have made their displeasure known by way of the aggregate review site Metacritic. Gaming news outlet Eurogamer reports that the average user score on the popular site is currently sitting at just 0.5, making it one of the poorest-received games of the year. Popular user reviews reference familiar disasters like the Cyberpunk 2077 launch in 2020, and some are even throwing around phrases like "the end of Rockstar."

Many gamers were skeptical of the GTA Trilogy before it released, but it's hard to imagine that anyone could foresee just how negatively the game would be received upon launch. Many fans are claiming that this trilogy was just a cynical cash grab from this once-beloved AAA giant, which, if true, would be very disappointing, and would definitely have some troubling implications for the state of the company moving forward. Whether this is the "end of Rockstar" is hard to say, but this release does little to inspire confidence.

This news is likely very saddening for long-time fans of the studio which was once considered among the best in the business when it came to the integrity and artistic value of its projects. It's now not uncommon to hear Rockstar mentioned in the same breath as other perceived industry villains like EA or Activision. Coupled with the departure of GTA producer Dan Houser last year, this news could spell trouble for the future of the long-running franchise.
