Green Lantern Made Fans Love a Psychotic Cat More Than Any Hero

While Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, and John Stewart might be the most recognizable members of the Lantern Corps to come from Earth, major Green Lantern fans know that their perennial enemies the Red Lanterns also boast a beloved recruit from this Crux World - Dex-Starr of Space Sector 2814. Dex-Starr first appeared in Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns, and is a blue tabby cat who experienced intense trauma, becoming one of the most vicious wielders of the red light of rage.

The Red Lantern Corps are rivals to Oa's Green Lantern Corps, and are usually depicted as villains or reluctant antiheroes led by the massive Atrocitus. Red Lantern Corps members are powered by the emotional spectrum and are able to tap into their rage to literally make their blood boil, choosing to use their fists and napalm-style blood to hurt their enemies, as opposed to using ring constructs like other Corps. Dex-Starr's tragic backstory is what led him to becoming a member of the Red Lantern Corps, endearing him to fans despite his constantly growing body count.

Dex-Starr's story starts back when he was 'Dexter,' and sees him abandoned in Brooklyn and eventually adopted by a loving older lady. After living a happy life with his owner for a time, a burglar breaks into their apartment, tragically killing her. The police kick Dexter onto the streets, where two bored and violent men decide it will be funny to toss him in a bag and throw him off the Brooklyn Bridge. Before Dexter hits the water, his intense rage and grief signal a nearby red power ring, which judges him to be a fitting recruit for the Red Lantern Corps. With that, Dex-Starr is reborn as an avatar of rage. With his new powers, Dex-Starr seeks out and kills the two men who threw him over the bridge, laying on their skulls and proclaiming that he will find and kill his owner's murderer before declaring to himself, "I good kitty." The Red Lantern's origin is revealed in Geoff Johns and Shawn Davis' 'Tales of Red Lantern Corps: Dex-Starr' from Green Lantern #55.

Dex-Starr has been described as the most sadistic and malicious of all the Red Lanterns. That is an impressive distinction, seeing as the Red Lantern Corps is literally all about malice and sadism. Since his debut, he has been a recurring Green Lantern adversary, and the rage the psychotic cat feels from how he and his owner were treated has never subsided. Dex-Starr has been portrayed as a partner and companion of Red Lantern leader Atrocitus, and was recently seen in the care of Jimmy Olsen in Superman: Leviathan Rising Special, before actually teaming up with Jimmy to help save Clark Kent.

Red Lanterns have done terrible things, but their rage is often righteous, and Dex-Starr's origin has made him a beloved favorite of Green lantern fans. While the Green Lanterns may protect innocents with the power of will, the rage-filled Red Lanterns seek a more primal form of justice, and few are more committed to that quest than Dex-Starr the cat.
