Warning! Spoilers ahead for Green Lantern #8
In DC Comics' new issue of Green Lantern, the identity of the culprit who destroyed the Central Power Battery, devastated Oa, and caused the deaths of huge swathes of the Green Lantern Corps is finally revealed. While this new series kicked off with the explosion of the Central Power Battery, the reason why and those behind it were not immediately identified. Now, the mysterious villain has been identified, and they're shockingly more connected and closer to the Corps than the surviving Green Lanterns could have ever imagined.
In previous issues of Green Lantern, the destruction of the Central Power Battery resulted in almost every Lantern losing the charge in the power rings, resulting in the deaths of many Lanterns as well as many being stranded, such as John Stewart. Furthermore, the Guardians of Oa have met a horrific fate due to their quantum entanglement with the Central Power Battery, being frozen in a state where it's currently unknown if they're actively dying or already deceased. Now, it turns out that was very much the intent. Green Lantern #8 comes from Geoffrey Thorne, ChrisCross, Juan Castro, Marco Santucci, and Michael Atiyeh.
However, Green Lantern Jo Mullein (whose modified ring still carries power) has been working with the United Planets to investigate the attack alongside Councilor Fel, a Coluan intellect who's been helping her gather data. In Green Lantern #8, their investigation reveals that two of the Guardians - Koyos and Nemosyni - chose not to merge with the Central Power Battery. Furthermore, Koyos was the Guardian murdered just before the Power Battery's explosion at the United Planets summit which was held on Oa. This leaves only his partner Nemosyni as an unknown quantity. However, the Guardian reveals herself to Fel before attacking the United Planets representative, serving as a confirmation that she's the one responsible for the Power Battery explosion, which has left her as the last Guardian standing.
While typical foes such as Sinestro or Atrocitus were being looked at as the most likely candidates for attacking the Green Lanterns, it's no doubt going to be a major shock when the Lanterns learn that the new threat which almost killed them all is one of their own Guardians. While details such as motive are still scarce, Councilor Fel did discover that Nemosyni was building weapons of some kind before she died, an indication that the rogue Guardian's work is not yet done.
It's going to be interesting to learn why Nemosyni murdered her fellow Guardians and nearly killed all of the Green Lanterns in the process. Furthermore, there has to be a reason why she and Koyos were seemingly against their fellow Guardians prior to the United Planets summit, arguing that their plans were "not evolution." While readers may now know the who behind the attack, it's clear that the overall mystery being told in DC's Green Lantern has only just begun.
