Ghostbusters Afterlife Director Wants Spinoffs In Multiple Genres

Jason Reitman, director of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, has expressed his interest in creating spinoffs of the franchise set in multiple genres. After almost three decades of no new film installments within the then-considered dead Ghostbusters franchise and a failed reboot attempt in 2016, Reitman, son of the original film's director, came forward with the development of a brand new film. The upcoming installment has been confirmed by Reitman to take place in the same continuity as the original two Ghostbusters films, carrying on the lore of the original.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife differs from the previous films, swapping out the bustling streets of New York City for the small-town streets of Summerville, Oklahoma. The plot itself is said to focus on the family members of late Ghostbuster, Egon Spengler, previously portrayed by the late great Harold Ramis, as they discover his eclectic past as one of New York City's finest paranormal investigators. Ghostbusters: Afterlife also features returning cast members Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts, whilst welcoming newcomers, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd.

In an interview with GizmodoReitman shared his thoughts on the revival that his film is bringing to the franchise, suggesting he wants to make more Ghostbusters movies in different genres. Read what Reitman said below:

One thing I wanted to do is set the table for Ghostbusters as a franchise to have all kinds of movies, and we need to do something that really was about setting a foundation and bringing the original 1984 story to a place so that other stories could bloom. I want to see the scary movies, the funny films. There’s so many places for Ghostbusters to go. And that’s what Afterlife is about. It’s about these generations making amends with each other in a way that brings one story to close and starts another one.

Reitman also expressed the difficulty he faced in creating a strong and worthy sequel to the original film, acknowledging the different aspects that appeal to many of the franchise's different fans. Furthermore, he also compliments Paul Feig's attempt at Ghostbusters, complimenting him for laying the groundwork on which his film has been built upon and initially broadening the franchise's possibilities.

While the original cast's lack of willingness to return for any potential Ghostbusters sequels can be accredited to the franchise laying dormant for so many years, lack of ideas and open-mindedness could have also greatly impacted the films. Feig's previous attempt was definitely reported to widen the horizons of what the Ghostbusters could be, but the film still retained most of the reused aspects, such as settings, enemies, and even certain plot points. It's clear from each of the previous films' successes that audiences want a different side to the Ghostbusters universe in order to give it a breath of fresh air.

From Reitman's passion for continuing the Ghostbusters franchise and his many ideas of showcasing different angles, it's clear that the future of the Ghostbusters has never been brighter. With his ideas, it is also more possible than ever to obtain another new cast of paranormal investigators for the team while still receiving support from the original cast returning for future installments, adding an extra layer of fan satisfaction and nostalgia. Either way, audiences will have to wait in anticipation for the franchise to continue once Ghostbusters: Afterlife releases on November 19.
