Gentefied returns to Netflix on November 10 for its second season, and the episodes pick up in the aftermath of the devastating cliffhanger that was Pop's (Joaquin Cosio, The Suicide Squad) potential deportation. Not only do the Morales cousins now have to band together as a family in the face of an unimaginable crisis, but they still have to deal with their individual challenges along the way.
Some of those challenges include Ana's (Karrie Martin Lachney) next career and relationship steps, Chris (Carlos Santos) rebuilding a relationship with his father, and Erik (J.J. Soria) balancing his own duties as a new father with his concern for his father figure. To add to all of those stressors, the loss of their family taco shop is another shadow hanging over their heads. But if there's anything fans know about the Morales clan, it's that they handle everything with plenty of heart and humor.
Lachney, Santos, and Soria spoke to Screen Rant about where each member of the family finds themselves at the start of season 2, and how Pop's fate affects them all.
Screen Rant: Karrie, Ana has Bree coming into her life, and she's a new woman who brings a to the story. But we have not forgotten Yessika. Can you talk about where her feelings may lie romantically this season?
Karrie Martin Lachney: I cannot say too much about the relationship. You know what I know, but I cannot confirm nor deny what is happening in Ana's love life currently. However, she is truly putting herself out there in her life - just in general.
Carlos, it seems Chris' plans for Paris are on hold, but plans to hang out with your dad are very much not on hold. Can you talk about that difficult dynamic coming to the forefront this season?
Carlos Santos: I was really excited about the second season, because I think that Dad being off screen the whole first season and having that be the bane of his existence [was great]. I was just really excited to play with Manuel Uriza, who played my dad.
But also, just being able to deal with those issues and put them out in the front and just have that struggle, was really fun. It was a really interesting take on it to finally see that face off. Dealing with that was really, really interesting for me.
JJ, I adore Lidia and Erik. But can you talk about balancing his family with his new family? How is Erik dealing with the back and forth here?
J.J. Soria: He's struggling with it.
Karrie Martin Lachney: I was just going to say: he's not!
J.J. Soria: He's juggling it, it's falling all over, and he's picking it up and trying to do it again. It's intense. You love both just as much and trying to figure out who are you not being loyal to by not being there. It was a lot, yeah.
I can definitely say this season... Whew! I marinated in a lot of music that had me in a depth of - I don't want to say darkness, but that's where it was. Dark feelings. It was a challenge. It was a challenging time for him.
Speaking of challenging times, Pop's impending immigration case obviously casts a huge shadow over the whole family. Karrie, can you talk about how Ana is dealing with what she has to fight through to help her grandpa?
Karrie Martin Lachney: I had just said that I think, in the first season, Ana was such a glue. And now it's like she can't hold anything together, so she's going to do it herself. Because everybody's dealing with their own issues.
I feel like with this, she just shut everything else out. Although her art is still there, her relationships are still there, her mom and sister are still there - I think that she is truly bulldozing through all of that just to focus on Pop this season. And she's sacrificing so much personally, because she knows that is the number one aspect of her life to save.
Can you each share one thing that you're excited for fans to see this season?
Carlos Santos: Let's just say there's a holiday-themed episode. The one that I'm most excited about - now you're giving it away. Now they'll be like, "There's more holidays?" There's one specific holiday-themed episode that I am just excited for people to see, because so much happens.
Karrie Martin Lachney: Oh, I think I would agree!
Carlos Santos: Yeah, that's the one I'm really waiting for people to watch, because it just encapsulates everything that's been building up to that moment. It's just so compacted, and you're gonna have to figure out what holiday it is when you watch it.
Karrie Martin Lachney: I think that might be mine, yeah.
J.J. Soria: I concur.
All 8 episodes of Gentefied's second season begin streaming November 10 on Netflix.
