The Red Mage in Final Fantasy XIV is a rapier-wielding, dual-casting mage that is known for its high versatility in combat. Like the Summoner job in Final Fantasy XIV, the Red Mage is gifted with mighty spells of destruction yet can also provide its team with magical utility, including heals, damage buffs, and even revives. However, from a glance at the diverse action system, spell doublecasting, and complex rotations, players might be overwhelmed from the start. Fortunately, the job offers a low-skill ceiling as long as players are patient in learning and practicing.
Introduced during Final Fantasy XIV's Stormblood expansion, Red Mage features dazzling spells and dapper armor sets, giving the job quite a distinct look from over classes. While it brightly shines in group activities, Red Mage is also a great choice when soloing older content, such as the Extreme Trials in A Realm Reborn. To unlock the job, players only need to fulfill a single level requirement.
The Red Mage job in Final Fantasy XIV is accessible after the player reaches Level 50 with any Disciples of War/Magic class or job. Keep in mind that Stormblood is required to play Red Mage. To start the job's questline, speak to a Distraught Lass in Ul'dah - Steps of Thal at X: 14.1, Y: 11.7, which is on the south side of the Sapphire Avenue Exchange, nearby the Gates of Thal. The quest, "Taking the Red," will lead the player outside the walls of Ul'dah to meet a mysterious Crimson Duelist named X'rhun Tia. The Red Mage storyline will continue with quests available at level intervals of two and three, meaning the player must level up the job on their own before accepting the next quest.
The Balance Gauge of White and Black Mana may seem confusing to players at first, but after gradually practicing Red Mage's rotations in combat, the dual-cast system should become second nature. If the gauge bar seems too imposing on-screen, players can switch between Normal and Simple versions by changing the display options in the individual HUD layout options. Be sure that the Red Mage job is currently equipped when making these changes.
The best way for Final Fantasy XIV players to efficiently level Red Mage between the job's questline level requirements is by queueing for Dungeons. After reaching a certain level, continue farming a Dungeon at a similar level until achieving the next Dungeon's level requirement. This process may take a few hours of farming; however, with XP buff from eating food or a Free Company, players should be able to unlock most of the Red Mage's high-level core abilities in no time.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam or Square Enix's official website.
