Doctor Strange's Death Just Broke a Major Rule of Marvel's Magic Lore

Warning: contains spoilers for Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1!

Marvel's Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme, and thus one of the most important magic users on Earth. Unfortunately for the planet and all who live on it, the Sorcerer Supreme has recently been killed, murdered by an as-yet unseen assailant. But the circumstances surrounding Strange's death continue to be mysterious, as it was recently revealed in Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1 that a cardinal rule of magic in the Marvel universe has been broken - and thus all other rules concerning the use of magic are circumspect.

The Death of Doctor Strange crossover event begins as the good doctor is murdered on his very doorstep; a knife has been embedded in his chest (the knife appears ordinary, but could be magical in nature). His magical friends (and even villains) arrive but are too late to save him, as are the Avengers - Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel and Thor - who instead face the new villains known as the Three Mothers. The trio easily win the fight against Earth's Mightiest Heroes, sending some like Thor and Iron Man into despair.

But after the Avengers get their bearings and fight off three Juggernauts (technically the images of them), a revelation is revealed: both the Three Mothers and the mysterious Child (a being the heroes have not met, but the Three Mothers mention) attacked the demon Cyttorak - who's ruby lends power to the Juggernaut - in his realm, the Crimson Cosmos. This caused Cyttorak to run and escape the four attackers. Those who are well-versed in the lore of the magical Marvel universe know this should technically not be possible under any circumstance.

In the Marvel Universe, Hell Lords such as Cyttorak are meant to be completely omnipotent within their home dimensions. This means Cyttorak has absolutely no cause to run, for who can possibly do harm to a nigh-omnipotent being? This revelation means the Child has acquired so much power and otherworldly energy that they are able to subvert a written-in-stone law of the Marvel universe and threaten someone with - supposedly - infinite power.

Perhaps the worst detail in this situation is the fact that the one person who could potentially have more information regarding the Child - Doctor Strange - is dead. While his younger self investigates his own murder, he clearly is out of his depth (he's not even the Sorcerer Supreme) and knows as much about the Three Mothers and the Child as the rest of the Avengers. Doctor Strange may be dead, but the mystery of the all-powerful Child lives on, at least for now.
