DC Comics Promotes Childhood COVID Vaccination in Partnership With Biden

The United States Food and Drug Administration recently authorized COVID-19 vaccines for children ages five to eleven. This represented a significant moment in the fight against the pandemic and the ruling means millions of children will soon be vaccinated. DC Comics, in partnership with the Biden/Harris administration and the Children’s Hospital Association, will be releasing special materials designed to promote the vaccine with children and ease their fears.

Development of a vaccine for COVID began at the onset of the pandemic. Drawing on existing knowledge of similar viruses, medical researchers around the world worked tirelessly to create the vaccine, and in December of 2020, the FDA cleared the Pfizer vaccine for adults. A mass roll out of the vaccine began; booster shots for at-risk individuals have also been authorized.  In May of 2021, individuals ages 12-15 were cleared for the vaccine, but questions still lingered as to when small children would get their turn. Finally, in late October, the FDA authorized the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11, hopefully giving parents much-needed relief. However, injections and shots can be terrifying for children and to help ease their anxieties, DC Comics will be releasing special activity books, as well as adhesive bandages featuring some of DC’s most iconic characters.

The specifics of the campaign were posted in a press release to DC Comics’ website. During the months of November and December, any child ages 5-12 who receives a COVID vaccine at a Children’s Hospital will receive a DC-themed adhesive bandage, as well as coloring and activity books featuring DC characters. In addition, DC has created special posters to hang in the lobbies of Children’s Hospitals. To help kick off the initiative, First Lady Doctor Jill Biden traveled to Texas Children’s Hospital—along with Wonder Woman and Superman, to meet children receiving their vaccine.

Since the pandemic began, DC Comics has been active in promoting awareness of COVID, such as the “Mask Up America” initiative, and this new program is the latest step. As COVID continues to ravage the world and new variants appear, vaccines and boosters become even more important. Now that the FDA has cleared the vaccine for children, humanity can take a big step forward in curbing the spread of COVID. Parents know that injections can be an understandable ordeal for children. Using characters such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to help raise COVID awareness will hopefully go a long way in assuaging any fears a child might have about getting a vaccination.

As cases continue to grow, vaccines become even more imperative. DC Comics is doing its part in the war against COVID-19, creating special materials to help ease the fears of children receiving the vaccine.
