Captain Marvel 2 production designer Cara Brower exclusively teases the film's massive scale and scope and reuniting with Candyman co-writer/director Nia DaCosta. Plot details for the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel is currently unknown, but The Marvels will see Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan and Teynoah Parris' Monica Rambeau teaming up as the titular heroes. Parris made her MCU debut in Disney+'s WandaVision as an adult Monica who becomes imbued with powers following her time in The Hex while Vellani is set to make her debut in fellow streaming series Ms. Marvel, expected to premiere sometime next year.
Development on The Marvels first began in mid 2019 as Marvel Studios confirmed plans for a Captain Marvel sequel, though wouldn't gain steam until early 2020 when WandaVision alum Megan McDonnell signed on to pen the script and Larson set to return. After a few months of searching for a female director to take the helm for the film, DaCosta would sign on to direct in August 2020 with Vellani and Parris confirmed to be in the film during December's Disney Investor Day. As The Marvels production continues, one crew member is excited to bring the heroic trio to the screen.
While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss Candyman for its home media release, production designer Cara Brower offered a tease for her work on The Marvels. Brower opened up about reuniting with director DaCosta, expressing her gratitude for the filmmaker bringing her on for both of their big-budget debuts and the "wild ride" that is the MCU. See what Brower said below:
"It’s such an honor that Nia thought that I could go on this adventure with her and it is an adventure. This is a wild ride. [Laughs] Working on a Marvel feature is unlike anything else, it’s just massive, the scale and the scope is massive, and you can just dream up whatever you want to. There’s definitely a pace you have to work at. But I was really honored that she believed that I could make this jump with her and it’s been a really great collaboration, which is all that I really wanted, because I really admire her.
I think she’s so smart and so gifted. This was a huge opportunity for her and I didn’t want to mess it up for her by being unprepared, because it was a giant leap for me, because I hadn’t really even worked on those types of films in the art department. So it was a huge leap of faith for her to want to bring me on this project with her."
The announcement that DaCosta had signed on to helm The Marvels brought much curiosity from audiences, marking her as not only the first Black woman to helm an MCU title but also the youngest filmmaker in the franchise, beating out previous record holder Ryan Coogler. In the months since signing on to the film, DaCosta and her stars have teased the epic scale to come from the Captain Marvel sequel and Brower's comments certainly fall in line with these discussions. It should also come as good news to fans to hear Brower indicate a true creative freedom being allotted to the film, which DaCosta has previously assured is the case for the film.
Given The Marvels will see Carol, Ms. Marvel and Monica all team up to face a new threat, it's understandable the production would be extended to a larger scale and scope in comparison to its origin story predecessor. With DaCosta promising the film will also explore the human side of superheroes and tackle heavy topics, audiences can also look towards the layered storytelling McDonnell was a part of with WandaVision. Only time will tell what the story holds when The Marvels hits theaters on February 17, 2023.
