Call of Duty: Vanguard takes players back to the series’ favorite well-trodden setting of World War II, but recent leaks suggest that the game will put a new spin on that through the integration of some famous WWII-era fictional heroes. Vanguard has carved out its own place amongst the numerous WWII Call of Duty games, and this suggests that the game is looking to stand out a bit more with some fan service.
The Call of Duty series is no stranger to fun pop-culture collaborations, though they’ve mostly popped up in the more contemporary titles. The Halloween events from past games have done much of that, offering players references and costumes tied to various horror movies and media. This annual event, known as The Haunting, transforms maps into spooky alternate versions, and puts seasonal spins on the gameplay, especially in the Zombies mode. Vanguard will have to wait until next year to celebrate Halloween, but it seems to be working on some crossovers of its own, including a Call of Duty crossover with Attack on Titan.
The latest leak for Vanguard comes from ModenasHD on Twitter (via Video Games Chronicle) and alleges that the game may be planning crossovers with famous WWII-era characters Indiana Jones and Captain America. The tweet draws attention to two references in the game’s files that have been leaked by data files, one each for each character. There’s also some art that seemingly will appear in the game’s Operator store when the event featuring these characters launches. How the characters will function in the game is anyone’s guess, though Call of Duty has integrated other unusual characters into its games in the past, such as Scream’s Ghostface and Frank the Rabbit from Donnie Darko. Rambo also showed up in Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, so the series does like to keep its tie-ins thematically appropriate.
Including Indiana Jones and Captain America in Vanguard makes sense. The two both come from stories set during World War II and are both part of Disney-owned properties. Since Vanguard sees the player taking on several different perspectives in order to fight the Nazis, adding in these characters, best known for fighting Nazis themselves, feels like a natural fit. The datamined code that was uncovered referenced something known as “Ah,” which some are speculating means “American Heroes,” and is the name of an event coming to Vanguard that will introduce Captain America and Indiana Jones (and potentially other characters as well). Reviews of Call of Duty: Vanguard have praised the multiplayer, to which these characters would make strong additions.
Call of Duty: Vanguard has only been for about a week, and already rumors abound about future content and DLC. While fans eagerly await Infinity Ward’s upcoming title in the series, set to release next year, Vanguard offers a return to the series’ roots. And if these leaks turn out to be true, it’s proving to portray World War II in quite a unique way.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5.
