Survivor 41: Everything To Know About The 'Beware Advantage'

Survivor 41 has introduced several new game twists, including its most complex yet: the "Beware Advantage." The season 41 game has already been complicated by new wrinkles like the "Risk or Protect" dilemma, in which the castaways have to participate in a prisoner's dilemma scenario and decide whether to risk their vote for a chance at an extra vote. Additionally, the "Shot in the Dark" opportunity allows each contestant one shot at a one-in-six chance random draw for immunity at Tribal Council.

With the new era of Survivor in full swing, the latest twist to appear on the show is the Beware Advantage. The first episode of the season showed host Jeff Probst hiding the advantage at one of the camps before the players arrived. Essentially, the advantage gives the player that finds it a chance at an immunity idol. The catch is that a player from each of the other tribes must also find the advantage hidden at their respective camps for the idol's powers to take effect. The three players have to say a certain assigned phrase at immunity challenges to signal that the advantage has been found. If a Survivor 41 player finds and decides to open the advantage before the other tribes' advantages have been found, that player loses their vote until all of the advantages are opened and idols are activated by the phrases being said.

The second episode of season 41 saw 20-year-old app developer Xander Hastings find the Yase tribe's Beware Advantage. He decided to open the advantage and then learned of the stipulations involved. In order to signal that he had found it, Xander had to say the phrase "I truly believe that butterflies are dead relatives saying hi" at the immunity challenge. Xander managed to work in the phrase during pre-challenge mat chat with Probst, in front of all of his fellow contestants. Unfortunately for Xander, the other phrases were not used at the challenge, as the other tribes' Beware Advantages remained unfound. As a result, Xander lost his vote until the idols are activated and cannot use his extra vote that he gained from his Risk or Protect choice in the first episode. Xander also cannot use his Shot in the Dark opportunity, as he doesn't have a vote to risk for safety.

The stipulations of the Beware Advantage certainly bring a large entertainment factor to the show. It is still unknown if Xander will have to work the "butterflies" phrase into each challenge until the other advantages are found. If so, it will no doubt lead to more hilarious moments. This unique Survivor 41 twist adds an extra layer of difficulty in acquiring a Hidden Immunity Idol that hasn't been present in previous seasons, in which idols were often found with relative ease.

The twist is a bit complicated, though, especially when combined with all of the other format changes of Survivor 41. It's already difficult to keep track of how many votes each player has and how the rules of the twists interact with one another. Survivor is definitely experimenting with fresh ideas, but if they don't practice moderation, it's possible the season will get bogged down in its own complexity.
