Apple has quietly extended its service coverage duration for AirPods Pro with ANC and crackling sound issues from a span of two years to now covering them for three years from the date of retail purchase. Originally released in 2019, the premium earbuds haven’t been refreshed or seen an upgrade yet, but it appears that the early batches suffered from some quality issues. One of those issues had to do with the highlight feature of the AirPods Pro — Active Noise Cancellation or ANC for short.
Ever since the higher-end earbuds debuted, a number of users have reported that the ANC feature was said to malfunction, allowing in external noise or reducing the bass output when noise-cancellation was enabled. Some users also experienced a static or cracking sound issue with their AirPods Pro. The issue was widely reported, prompting Apple to launch what the company calls “AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues” in 2020. The program initially covered AirPods for a duration of two years and replaced faulty units.
However, a Reddit user spotted that the support document has been updated and it now says that AirPods Pro with ANC and crackling noise issue are now covered for a span of three years from the day of their retail purchase. Apple says that only a small percentage of AirPods Pro are affected by the sound issue and only units manufactured before October of 2020 exhibit the problem. As part of the program, users who own a defective AirPods Pro with the aforementioned issues can visit an authorized Apple service provider or an Apple Store, and after prompt verification by service personnel, they will get a replacement unit. Users can also get in touch with Apple Support online to avail the benefits of the replacement program.

However, it must be noted here that the AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues doesn’t affect the standard warranty coverage for the Apple earbuds, which are expected to get a successor in two different sizes soon. Apple has issued a few DIY steps for users to get rid of the AirPods Pro ANC issue. Users need to make sure that they are running the latest software on devices it is paired with, and also clean the mesh at the top of the earbuds as debris or earwax collected above it can affect the ANC performance. When the ANC issue raises its head, users will hear increased background noise, especially from street vehicles or airplanes.
In the meanwhile, Apple is reportedly working on some impressive health-centric capabilities for the next-gen AirPods Pro. The company is said to be experimenting with “updated motion sensors” that will allow fitness tracking. The new sensors will allow the earbuds to track activities such as running and calories burned during workouts. There are also rumors of the AirPods Pro successor packing an ambient light sensor (ALS) that will pave the way for heart rate tracking and blood oxygen level measurement.
