The Addams Family 2 has released to theaters and streaming, and this is how and when you can watch it. As the sequel to the 2019 animated release The Addams Family, the film sees Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) take their children Wednesday (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Pugsley (Javon Walton) on a family road trip. This attempt to bond turns sideways when the family learns that Wednesday might not be an Addams family member after all.
The iconic family has been a cultural staple for decades since its television show in 1964. Although the series was canceled just after two seasons, it jumpstarted the franchise that continues the legacy of cartoonist Charles Addams’ macabre characters. From there, the Addams Family has since appeared in six more films, including the critically and commercially successful The Addams Family (1991) and its darker sequel Addams Family Values (1993).
Following the box-office success of The Addams Family in 2019, The Addams Family 2 was immediately greenlit for a sequel effort. However, the film has received generally disappointing reviews from movie critics. The animated sequel struggles to connect with the previous installment’s narrative, and it fails to capture the charm, grim aesthetic, and humor the family is known for. On the other hand, there are still those who would recommend the film, especially as a lighthearted treat to younger audiences. That said, here are ways to watch The Addams Family 2.
Reportedly, The Addams Family 2 was slated for release on October 22, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic upending movie studios’ plans, the sequel film was moved to October 1, 2021. Additionally, two months before the new premiere date, it has been announced that the animated film will be subject to a hybrid release. Aside from opening in theaters, it will also be available for online rental.
The Addams Family 2 is not yet available on subscription-based streaming platforms, like Netflix, HBO Max, or Disney+, and, unfortunately, there is no word yet on when it will stream for free. In the meantime, one can revisit its predecessor, The Addams Family, which is streaming on Hulu, Paramount+, Epix, and DIRECTV, to get caught up for the sequel.
Since October 1, The Addams Family 2 has already been available for rent from video-on-demand services, like Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, VUDU, Apple TV, Redbox, Verizon Fios TV, and YouTube. A 48-hour watch period (after hitting play) costs $19.99, although rental duration typically differs depending on the vendor. It may be more expensive than going to the theaters, but it pays off, especially for a more convenient family viewing. After all, The Addams Family 2 is meant to be shared with the family this Halloween season.
