Tyler Posey Recalls First Meeting With Dylan O’Brien On Teen Wolf

On the fifth anniversary of Teen Wolf’s finale, Tyler Posey recalls meeting co-star Dylan O’Brien for the first time. Loosely based on the 1985 movie of the same name, Teen Wolf centered on Scott McCall (Posey). A young werewolf who defends his California town from dangerous forces, Scott is helped along by a loyal group of friends. The show aired on MTV for six seasons, premiering in June 2011 and wrapping up in September 2017. Over the course of its run, the series lost a number of its main and recurring characters as cast changes occurred fairly regularly on the supernatural drama.

Appearing in almost every episode, O’Brien starred in the role of Stiles Stilinski. Starting off as Scott’s lovably sarcastic best friend, Stiles would gradually evolve on Teen Wolf. But even as their characters grew, and even as the faces around them frequently shifted from one season to the next, viewers were drawn to the deep and open-hearted friendship between Scott and Stiles. In new remarks, Posey opens up about how the on-screen bond between the characters came from a very real place.

As part of a feature on Buzzfeed, Posey spoke at length about what it was like to meet O’Brien for the first time. The actor noted that he was surprised by how normal his co-star seemed, in comparison to the other child stars Posey came across. He also admitted that, after spending some time with O’Brien and getting to know him, they “fell in love.” Posey’s quote is below.

“I was wearing a Hurley sweater, which is a skate-surf company, and Dylan was wearing a DVS shirt, which is a skateboard company — the first pair of skateboard shoes I ever bought as a kid. And he had a buzzed head, and I was like, ‘This kid looks cool.’ I immediately was like, ‘What’s this kid’s deal?’ Because as an actor, I grew up in a small town, but skateboarding was the biggest thing in that town — I love to skateboard, I love punk rock — and I didn’t really fit in with other actors, so this was the first time I saw another actor who seemed like a normal kid like me. And then I found out that he was — he grew up in a surf town and skated with his friends and played in a band, and we fell in love that day.”

Posey and O’Brien have both spoken candidly about what it was like to be thrust into the spotlight at a young age and, as can often be the case, it served as a very powerful bonding experience that helped elevate Teen Wolf. Even as the show experienced jarring shifts, garnering criticism from fans for forgetting about popular supporting players like Danny, the relationship between Stiles and Scott remained solid. In the later seasons, it could be argued that the friends grew even closer as a result of rifts that led to a better understanding of one another.

O’Brien and Posey have both pitched their ideas for a Teen Wolf revival and fans of their show, for their part, have been mostly in agreement. Part of that comes down to desire for the story to continue and to correct potential missteps in the original series. But, on the whole, it reflects the fondness that audiences still have for the real, lived-in chemistry that the cast of Teen Wolf brought to the screen.
