For its first 20 years and 40 seasons, the game of Survivor stranded its contestants in various remote locations for 39 long, physically and mentally taxing days. That is, the game lasted for 39 days only for those players who were successful and lucky enough to make it that far in game. With a player eliminated from the competition roughly every three days, not every castaway stayed "on the island" very long.
Over the years, certain Survivor players endeared themselves to viewers while other players annoyed the fans at home. Unfortunately, some of the obnoxious players made it deep into the game while certain fan-favorite Survivor players never even made the tribe merge.
10 Too Long: Phillip Sheppard (Redemption Island)
Among the hundreds of players from all walks of life who have played Survivor, Phillip Shappard stands as one of the most eccentric, most inscrutable, and most obnoxious the show has ever seen. Phillip got on everyone's nerves, including and especially eventual winner "Boston Rob" Mariano. However, being a seasoned player, Boston Rob was smart enough to bite his tongue and ally with the despised "former federal agent" to drag him all the way to the final tribal council as a goat, much to viewers' chagrin. In the end, Phillip received only one jury vote (from Ralph, whom Phillip had flattered as a hard worker). It was more than he deserved.
9 Too Soon: Cao Boi Bui (Cook Islands)
Cao Boi Bui was one of the most entertaining castaways during Survivor: Cook Island. A laid-back hippie type, Cao Boi's eccentric personality brought a lot of amusement to the season. Not only that, but he reinvented Survivor strategy when the idea of splitting the tribal council vote came to him in a dream. It was the first time anyone on the show ever implemented the strategy that is now standard practice in the game. Despite his game-changing innovation, Cao Boi's strategic dreams didn't keep him from elimination. His tribe voted him out on Day 15.
8 Too Long: Shambo Waters (Samoa)
Survivor: Samoa was a frustrating season with a lot of unlikable players such as early boot Ben Browning and all-time great Survivor villain Russell Hantz. Shambo Waters wasn't exactly a villain, but she did get on her tribemates' nerves, and viewers didn't have a very high opinion of her either.
Opinionated but largely clueless, Shambo was obtuse about both the game's strategetic and social dynamics, yet she was dragged deep into the game as a pawn before being discourtesouly dumped on Day 36.
7 Too Soon: Maralyn "Mad Dog" Hershey (The Australian Outback)
Right from the start of Survivor's second season, Mad Dog cut a memorable figure. The 52-year-old retired cop with the gravelly voice, white hair styled in a crew cut, and nictotine patch on her arm displayed an enormous, lovable personality. Unfortunately, as one of the older contestants, she couldn't keep up with her tribemates physically, and they voted her out on Day 9 for being a challenge liability. Fans couldn't argue with the logic of voting out Mad Dog, but they also couldn't help feeling they'd been robbed of one of the season's best characters.
6 Too Long: Tarzan Smith (One World)
It's difficult for Survivor fans to pick just one One World castaway who overstayed their welcome, because this is a season that is widely regarded as one of Survivor's worst largely due to its awful cast. With the notable exception of eventual winner Kim Spradlin, One World was loaded with unlikable people who were terrible players. "Tarzan" Smith takes the prize for being obnoxious, pushy, and downright unsanitary. Yet he lasted until Day 36 in a season whose initial tribes had been divided along gender lines by voting with the women to pick off his former male tribemates. Once Tarzan was the last man standing, the five remaining women showed him the door.
5 Too Soon: Brice Izyah Johnston (Cagayan)
It's hard to look at a season as good as Survivor: Cagayan and find reasons to complain, especially given its excellent cast of characters. However, the problem with so many great people in one season is that some of them get voted out early. Brice stood out among a group of strong personalities as having one of the strongest and most likable.
Unfortunately, Survivor players often consider likability to be a threat in the game, which is why Brice's tribe voted him out on Day 8. Even years after his season aired and despite his early exit, Brice remains a fan-favorite in the devoted Survivor community.
4 Too Long: Sean Kenniff (Borneo)
The first season of Survivor is much different from how the show looks now. Some contestants were there for the game, and some were there for the experience. By and large, the game-minded players swiftly took out the "experience" people, but Sean Kenniff, who became infamous for his "strategy" of voting out other players in alphabetical order, lasted 36 days. Even in this first, still-figuring-things-out season, Sean should never have been allowed to stick around given his boneheaded voting method.
3 Too Soon: Vince Sly (Worlds Apart)
As with One World, fans of Survivor often rank Worlds Apart as one of the show's worst seasons due to a combination of brainless gameplay and hateful players. Vince Sly was barely a blip during the season, lasting only six days before becoming the second player voted out.
The eccentric coconut vendor — "As a coconut vendor, I seek truth; I'm a seer of real" — apparently was too strange and pushy for his tribe. But given the ugliness that emerged among the players who lasted a lot longer, many viewers might have preferred to see what the coconut vendor could have brought to the game instead.
2 Too Long: Angelina Keeley (David Vs. Goliath)
Angelina quickly carved out a reputation for herself as a typical "Karen" in Survivor: David vs. Goliath, a season otherwise packed with likable contestants. Angelina displayed a sense of entitlement coupled with a martyr complex that got on her tribemates' nerves and earned her the contempt of many Survivor fans. But sometimes being unlikable helps a castaway stay in the game, because the other contestants know the unlikable player has little hope of earning any jury votes in the end. That's exactly what happened to Angelina. She made the final three, but zero of her compatriots voted for her to win.
1 Too Soon: Francesca Hogi (Redemption Island, Caramoan)
Poor Francesca. She's best known, and probably will always be best known, as the only Survivor contestant to be first elminated in two different seasons. In Survivor: Redemption Island, Phillip Sheppard took an instant disliking to Francesca and organized against her, getting her voted out in the season premiere. The show invited her back to play again in Survivor: Caramoan, but again her tribe voted her out first. It was a shame both times, because Francesca seemed perfectly lovely, and fans couldn't help feeling like they'd been robbed — twice — of a potentially great Survivor character.
