Stardew Valley Creator Doesn't Know If There'll Be More Updates

The creator of Stardew Valley isn't sure if he will ever release another update to the beloved farming simulator. The most recent update was the 1.5 expansion in late 2020, which added a new location and tons of highly-requested content for Stardew Valley.

Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has been developing Stardew Valley for the better part of ten years, mostly on his own. The overwhelming success of the game enabled him to keep working on it after launch, adding all sorts of new content and features through various updates. At this point, Stardew Valley contains more content than the Harvest Moon games that originally inspired it. Still, fans have been wondering if and when a 1.6 update to the game could be coming - but it sounds like that won't happen any time soon.

As reported by Eurogamer, Barone spoke about the future of the game during a recent stream. He and Zach "UnsurpassableZ" Hartman were hosting the $40,000 Stardew Valley tournament on Twitch and held a community Q&A session at the conclusion of the event. When Barone was asked about the possibility of marrying non-marriageable NPCs in the game, he stated that there was nothing of that sort in active development, emphasizing that it would be "a ton of work." Although Barone did say that more marriage candidates "would be fun" and he has two existing characters in mind, that doesn't mean there's going to be another update. "Right now, I'm focused on my next game. So we'll see."

Of course, Barone was also asked about his new game, and he did share a bit about it during the Q&A session. Barone didn't give much detailed info about the game, but he confirmed that it would be another pixel art game with a top-down perspective. "In some ways, it is kind of similar to Stardew Valley, but it's not a farming game. It's something different." Certainly, many Stardew Valley players would be excited to see how this new game compares to the entry that put Barone on the map. But it's also likely that many players aren't happy with the knowledge that Stardew Valley won't be updated any time soon.

Judging by his wording, it seems like Barone is done working on Stardew Valley, at least for the time being. After a decade of development and with the game's massive, vibrant modding community, it's no surprise that Barone wants to move on to another creative endeavor. If he is indeed announcing that new game soon, then fans have a very good reason to be excited.
