In October, Star Trek star William Shatner will explore the final frontier for real, heading into space on a Blue Origin rocket. The original series of Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969. In addition to Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, the iconic science fiction series starred Leonard Nimoy as Spock, DeForest Kelley as Bones McCoy, James Doohan as Scotty, Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, and George Takei as Sulu.
Although William Shatner doesn't intend on returning to the Star Trek universe and has had many roles since then, including starring in the long-running television shows Boston Legal and T.J. Hooker, his name will always be synonymous with the intrepid Captain Kirk. This is for good reason, considering he played the role on 79 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, reprised the role in seven Star Trek motion pictures plus seven video game adaptations. He also performed the voice of Kirk in 22 episodes of Star Trek: The Animated series, which ran for 2 seasons in the early '70s. After having spent so much time with the character, he's finally going method by actually visiting space.
This trip is the only natural progression from the Zero-G flight that William Shatner took with fans back in 2017. According to TMZ, William Shatner is set to actually leave the atmosphere in October. He will be part of the second crew on the New Shepard rocket ship, which is run by Blue Origin, the suborbital spaceflight services company founded by Jeff Bezos. It is currently unknown what other spacefarers will be joining him on the journey.
This flight will be taking place 55 years and 1 month after William Shatner first debuted as Captain Kirk. Shatner is now 90 years old, so this trip will make the actor the oldest person to ever be in space. This would break the record made in July of this year by astronaut Wally Funk, who had her first space flight at the age of 82, also on the New Shepard.
Star Trek has meant a lot to fans in the many decades of existence. It's only fitting that one of the most important figures in bringing the show to life should get to see what the stars are really like. Reportedly, Shatner's space flight is being filmed as part of an upcoming documentary, so even though fans aren't invited on this particular trip, they may get to see his full reaction to the experience soon.
